President Nixon announced a 15 percent reduction in gasoline and jet fuel deliveries and 10 to 25 percent cuts in heating oil and industrial oil use to avert a severe energy shortage. The plan includes Sunday gasoline sales bans, regulatory reductions starting Jan 1 1974, and voluntary refinery cuts to ease the 1972 baseline shortages.
Louisiana service station owners expect to follow President Nixon’s call for voluntary Sunday closings and energy saving cuts. Association president Daniel H. Usner said meetings will address the 15 percent gasoline delivery cut and potential worker layoffs as regulations set to take effect December 7 are drafted.
The House Appropriations Committee approved a 1.4 billion catch-all bill adding 52.1 million for accelerated energy research and 21.1 million for mandatory fuel allocation programs. Robert Lee Bob Frantom 72 of 309 Bell Ave Monroe died after a brief illness at St Francis Hospital. The House Appropriations Committee tentatively approved the administration proposal for a 5.5 percent cost-of-living raise for all state employees and public school staff. The bill, amended to set Jan 1 for unclassified pay and half-year basis for teachers, now moves to the full House.
