Pentagon To Cut Personnel Abroad
The Pentagon will cut military personnel abroad by 15,000 and close 19 consular posts 17 in the western hemisphere. Laird said about 3,825 civilian jobs overseas will be eliminated with an estimated $50 million annual savings. The move accompanies a broader goal to trim U.S. forces by about 225,000 this year and follows Nixon’s earlier call for a 10 percent foreign-area reduction. Consulates to close include Goteborg and many others in Latin America and the Caribbean.
