The nation’s extended holiday weekend traffic deaths reached 488 on highways from 6 p.m. Wednesday to midnight Sunday, the highest for Thanksgiving since 1958. Fires killed 44, miscellaneous accidents 147, pushing total fatalities to 679, a weekend record.

Three life term inmates at Folsom State Prison overran a Sunday service led by Rev. Frank Mapes and a 15 member choir from Bethel Temple Sacramento. They held hostages for hours in a corner office, then released worshippers after guards opened talks. One inmate, Conrad Becker, died from a stab wound after resisting the attackers.
Havana said it would permit inspection of Soviet withdrawal of offensive weapons if the United Nations confirms the dismantling of bases used against Castro. It insisted the U N verify training camps and pirate bases on both sides, and warned the U S must also agree to inspections on its territory.

Sherman Louis Carroll of Columbia High School was chosen as Louisiana's delegate to the House of Burgesses in Williamsburg Virginia in February. The State Student Council Association selects one delegate annually to join students from foreign countries for three days of discussion on youth issues. Carroll, son of Dr and Mrs E L Carroll, is Student Council president and active in band and youth groups.
Four young Englishmen kayaked up Buck's River in northern Canada seeking traces of Sir John Franklin's 1845 46 Northwest Passage expedition. They reported in New Orleans that Franklin died during the voyage and only a brief message from 1847 survives. Previous searches found no conclusive remains or markers of the 138 officers and men.
