Five Trainmen Die in Crash at Orchard Idaho
Five crewmen were killed when a westbound Union Pacific freight collided with an eastbound train. An overhead trestle toppled, diesel tanks exploded, and 15 cars derailed. One crewman helped direct the switch before the crash. Cattle car derailed with all cattle killed.

Snowbound California family rescued after week of hunger
A four member family near Carson Pass in the High Sierra survived a week without food after their car stalled on a closed road. Ralph Hilton 41 searched for help, traveling on foot in freezing weather. Rescuers reached them with a snow tractor after a 53 mile high altitude trek, finding the family in good shape aside from hunger and exhaustion.
