In West Frankfort Illinois two miners died and eight were badly burned when a blast hit the Wilmington and Franklin Coal Company mine number one. About 922 workers were in the mine at the time and rescue reports said most others were believed above ground.
The United States railroad labor board awarded raises to about 5,500 telegraphers and station agents totaling roughly 364 thousand dollars.
