The Thanksgiving period from Wednesday 6 p.m. to Thursday midnight saw at least 161 violent deaths in the United States, including 103 traffic fatalities and 58 in miscellaneous accidents. Fourteen deaths occurred in Alabama tornadoes, with states like California, Illinois and Ohio each reporting ten traffic deaths. Notable cases include a log cabin fire near Rockville Indiana killing a mother and her three children, and a Newark New Jersey father dying while trying to save his eight children.
Mrs. Annie Krepps of Baucomville was injured shortly before 9 a m Friday when struck by an automobile at the Jefferson and North Second street intersection. She was taken by Mulhearn ambulance to St Francis Sanitarium for shock and minor injuries. no fractures reported. The car was driven by Tom C Standifer of 204 Stubbs avenue. witnesses said she walked from a drug store toward DeSiard street.
Communists in Czechoslovakia dispatch search committees to rural areas to arrest and penalize large landowners accused of sabotaging the five year plan. Reports in Rude Pravo say confiscations fines and prison sentences are used as the drive widens to liquidate the so called economic saboteurs among village wealthiers as part of a broader push toward collectivization.
Andrew Thomas, 29, of Detroit, phoned Chicago police claiming to report a thwarted burglary, but the caller identified as the detained suspect. He was found at 1327 North Ridgeway avenue after a struggle with Fred Zaleponksi, 22, who subdued him, gave first aid, and forced him to call police. Thomas had a prison record dating to 1935. Zaleponksi drove him to a neighbor for a report of the foiled crime.
Paris reports a 24 hour general strike by France two major unions disrupted transport but did not halt the economy. Large worker groups continued to work while some ports and rail lines faced stoppages. Lille shows varying strike rates across sectors. Bordeaux sees a train halted. Marseille docks partly active. Interior ministry cites partial rail and water workforce participation.
A fire at the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem’s old city died down with little damage to the dome and inner structures. Diplomats reported flames only partly damaged the lead dome and felt tar, while monks moved sacred treasures to safety as Jordanian authorities detained four workers for questioning. King Abdullah visited from Amman, assisting with the response.
Clarkesdale Miss Nov 25 Officers sought a Hudson car after a burglary at Bank of Lula La early yesterday. Executive VP C W Poland reported a loss of 2490 dollars. The thieves failed to open a safe containing several thousand dollars. An acetylene torch was used to breach the vault.
Arnulfo Arias, a 49 year old surgeon, was proclaimed Panama's president by congress sealing a new regime after a week of turmoil sparked by Col. Jose Remon who ousted President Chanis. The Supreme Court had ruled Chanis constitutional moments earlier, but Remon installed Arias claiming he won the 1948 vote. Viva Arias echoed in the streets.
Washington officials and mine owners predicted new coal peace talks would be announced by Monday as United Mine Workers President John L. Lewis faced a possible Taft Hartley injunction if 380,000 soft coal miners east of the Mississippi walk out December 1. The miners, after a 52 day strike, are back at work during a three week truce ending November 30, with Truman’s authority to halt a renewed walkout under the injunction power under consideration.
Percy Coplon aged 53 died in Birmingham after 92 days of a planned 100-day fast begun August 25. He weighed 357 pounds at start, dropped to 245, and spent much of the ordeal in a pole-top house. Survived by wife Flora and daughter Hilda.

Donations honor late mayor George Breece and aid those in need amid high living costs. A donor letter from a family in debt requests Christmas assistance.
Aberdeen, Wash. 29 year old Alfred Leohner, babysitter for the Hunter family, says he spanked an 18 month old with a belt before accidentally stepping on the child's neck. The infant died Wednesday morning of cerebral hemorrhage from a broken neck. Prosecutor Krause kept Leohner in custody without charge pending autopsy. The Hunters said he had lived with them and their six children in a crowded two room waterfront home with no electricity.
Five Republican members of the House foreign affairs committee attacked the State Department over the Angus Ward case. They demanded firing of responsible officials and condemned the department’s actions as a “spineless performance” and “humiliating” in trying to free the U S consul general from a Chinese jail. They urged military action and criticized reliance on appeals to 30 nations, questioning why that approach wasn’t used sooner.
Washington officials report President Truman is pressed by Sen. Edwin Johnson and Rep. Kilday to appoint a top-notch executive as AEC chairman to replace Lilienthal. Lilienthal announced his resignation, with Truman hoping he may stay beyond December 31 if needed. Johnson criticizes Lilienthal’s secrecy while Kilday supports finding a qualified successor.
A 12 year old girl was found alive beside the body of her 11 year old sister under a 100 foot trestle near Rutledge after an all night search. The girls, last seen Wednesday, fell from the railroad bridge while playing near the ravine. Betty Henry remains in Chester Hospital in serious condition with shock exposure and internal injuries.
Chicago police foiled an escape plot at Cook County Jail to free James Morelli the death row killer. Two men, Dominic Demaria and Erville Burdick, tied to Morelli, were seized with hack saw blades a revolver and fishing line. Burdick said they planned to signal Morelli with lit matches to initiate the breakout prior to his scheduled execution.
Veep Alben Barkley, age 72, and his weeklong bride Mrs Carlton Hadley of St. Louis mark his birthday with a Thanksgiving cake in their Sea Island apartment. They plan to fly to New York on Dec 2 for a speaking engagement before resuming their honeymoon with ten days to spend in New York or Washington.
