U S government reports inflation at 3.7 percent over six months with higher clothing prices driving the October rise. Increases in used cars, home insurance, and property taxes also noted, while food prices edged up slightly and services rose led by health insurance adjustments.
The Dow Jones average rose 5.65 to 1010.69 as advances led declines 7 to 4 on the NYSE. Polaroid jumped 34 to 12.44 after Eastman Kodak abandoned instant film plans, while McCulloch Oil gained 1 percent to 16 on the AMEX. The Big Board rose 22 to 63.49 and the Amex 0.4 to 26.20.
Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird dedicated a memorial at the Pentagon to American journalists killed covering wars. The hallway was renamed the Correspondents' Corridor and a memorial alcove lists 60 newsmen and women who died since December 7, 1941 during U.S. military operations.

SINGAPORE AP Robin son’s Department Store a Singapore landmark burned down today. Nine persons trapped in two elevators and possibly others died police said. Store officials evacuated all 350 employees and unknown shoppers except eight employees and one employee’s wife. Police said firemen forced open one elevator and rescued six. Intense heat forced them back from the second and third elevators. A spokesman said nine families of Robinson’s employees filed missing persons reports. Police said three women died in an elevator but they had not accounted for a third elevator.

West Monroe man Lee Mann reunites with his sister Verna June Prince of Milford Michigan after 43 years apart.
