In Washington, liberal Democrats consider Edmund Muskie for the post of Senate whip or assistant leader. They note Russell B. Long of Louisiana leads the current caucus, with Muskie potentially challenging for the whip if persuaded.

In Bonn talks among the West's top money managers signs of a breakthrough appeared as pressure to revalue the mark ebbed. West German officials and Paris warned that France's gold and foreign currency reserves fell, with markets in France and West Germany closed amid ongoing monetary tensions.
Police escorted eight Ocean Hill Brownsville teachers barred from a school to the entrance as a tense stand off began. Protesters including community residents and nonunion teachers blocked the doorway while union leaders threatened a broader strike to end the school system crisis. Needing to report for class, the eight stood with police present as demonstrators entered the vestibule and later dispersed.

Ouachita Parish has shifted from a single crop economy to wider farming diversity over 33 years says retired County Agent J. J. Joyce Jr. Cotton remains the top income source at about 53 million dollars, soybeans at 37.5 million, and yams around 2 million. For the second time in a month burglars burglarized a safe at the Monroe Coca Cola Bottling Co. on the U S 165 bypass. Police said only a small amount of cash was taken. The break in mirrored tactics from a $2,500 burglary earlier this month.
Three U S aircraft were shot down near Da Nang killing eight Americans and wounding 12. A CH46 helicopter, an F100 Super Sabre, and an F4 Phantom were downed. The helicopter crash killed six Americans and injured 12. The Phantom crew of two died, while the Super Sabre’s two crew were rescued.
Curtis R. Cormier of Lafayette faced potential prison terms up to 99 years after allegedly attempting to rob George Guilbeau and his wife at their Lafayette home. Guilbeau stopped the attack by knocking away the gun and his wife striking the assailant with a chair, leading to Cormier’s arrest.
Police search for Brenda Ann Maquar a 3 year old abducted by a man 20 to 30 driving a dark compact car possibly a Mustang. More than 100 officers scan eastern New Orleans area and Gentilly as authorities appeal to the public for tips saying the case may be sex related.
Arkansas plane operator Harry Davis was admitted in undetermined condition after his craft struck a power line and crashed at McKain Private Airport along La Ark Road near Bonita. The plane was destroyed by flames and Davis’s wife and Mrs McKain witnessed the wreck.
