Westbrook Pegler rails against what he calls the public school racket and unionism in a New York column. He cites a Detroit high school teacher earning 2600 dollars plus 100 for coaching, arguing the system exploits teachers and pupils despite paid summer liberty.
An underground explosion in a east side water conduit injured six workers and left four unhurt as they crawled to safety. Cause suspected marsh gas ignited by a spark. Jack Agnew 26 a Michigan State College graduate and city water board inspector was seriously burned. His wife Rheva collapsed at his hospital bedside. Inspector Goertz attributed the blast to a spark from an air hammer. Firemen fought the blaze through the night.

The Associated Press reports widespread flooding across northern and central California and western Nevada with at least nine dead and thousands homeless. Reno saw six to eight feet of water flooding the casino district, while Sacramento faced 700 homes evacuated as the American River rose. Bear River breached levees in Yuba County, and more storms were forecast for the Sierra.
Berlin reports that East German Communist Boss Walter Ulbricht warned party leaders of a possible purge after two major crackdowns since last summer. He criticized election work in Neues Deutschland and questioned the 99.72 percent turnout for the single list front ticket. Ulbricht urged leaders to curb formalism and bureaucracy and demanded livelier leadership to mobilize voters.

They foresee reduced operations due to need to keep troops alive and in line, and anticipate rising North Korean Chinese friction and guerrilla activity.
Nationalist China's T. F. Tsiang told the United Nations that 45,000 Soviet agents control Chinese life and that Russia engineered the Chinese civil war. He urged a U.N. commission of inquiry into Russian aggression and Moscow's role in expanding the Red regime under Mao.
United States infantrymen with tank support crossed the Yalu River into deserted Hyesanjin on the Manchurian border amid cold, snow, and smoke. Maj. Gen. Washington November 21 Senator Ives charged President Truman bears responsibility for bipartisan policy gaps calling for Republican input in foreign policy decisions. He urged reevaluating Acheson’s role and hinted at changes once the new Congress opens. Lovett denied wide shortages of winter clothing for troops in Korea, noting only a few isolated cases.
Washington reports Senator Ives predicts wage and price controls will be needed by spring to curb inflation as prices rise. He supports targeted federal action, opposes extending federal rent control over New York’s law, and notes Truman seeks three more months of federal controls beyond December 31.
Boston reports Secretary of Labor Maurice J. Tobin is expected to resign to become Democratic National Committee chair. William M. Boyle Jr. relinquishes the post due to poor health, Tobin would take over after January 7, with plans to avoid holding both roles.
Santa Fe authorities investigate a one hour prison riot at the New Mexico penitentiary that injured six guards and damaged offices and the canteen. About 100 convicts armed with improvised weapons roamed the yard and workshops before state and city police restored order without gunfire. Mexican Consul Bernardo Blanco and his secretary were inside a guard house during the disturbance. the secretary was wounded by bricks and glass.
A 14 year old Natchez area girl Ollie May Byrne confessed the spree in Stanton Miss when she wounded her uncle and fired on her mother step father grandmother two officers and a mail carrier. Sheriff Burns held her in jail without charge as he recounted the attack scene by scene.
