A two story house fire at 2000 Pine street in New Orleans trapped 12 people including a blind man. A fretful crying baby awakened Mrs. Nelson, enabling escape and prompting neighbors and police to respond as the blaze spread rapidly.
A bed-ridden patient who had major surgery yesterday rose this morning and dialed the Portland sanitarium switchboard to report a hospital fire. Nurses and staff kept 99 patients calm as the boiler room blaze in a separate building was put out by the fire department on a third alarm.
Residents woke to flames as Mrs Hazard was awakened and alerted others. Mr. Leverich guided by a helper escaped with his family and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Smith and their kin from a adjoining section as the fire spread through the building.
In Dusseldorf a letter from Jack the Ripper describes in detail the murder of a woman's foster daughter, driving her toward insanity. Experts study the handwriting to identify the wholesale murderer blamed for more than half a dozen victims.
A mass meeting of Ouachita parish farmers along with bankers and businessmen will be held at the courthouse Monday at 1 30 pm. The event is announced by E R K Strahan agricultural agent and is hosted by the Louisiana Farm Bureau Cotton Growers Co operation association and the extension division of LSU College of Agriculture.
In the wake of winter racing season arrivals, New Orleans police arrested 178 men for investigation on charges of being dangerous or suspicious. Of these, 133 were charged with loitering and 40 for violations of the suspicious code, while officers also patrolled to curb illegal bookmakers and taverns tied to race horses.
A major explosion in downtown Washington rubble damaged a city block near a McCrory store. Firefighters and police evacuated victims by private car and ambulance, with 10 injured removed by 2 PM and feared fatalities under assessment. Officials suspected an overheated boiler beneath the shop.
Mrs. Trene Roever 35 held on $1 000 bail for examination on charges of holding three month old Donald Larney against his will. Later she confessed a longing for another child saying her doctor had told her she could not have more. Donald was recovered unharmed and returned to his parents. A 86 year old Brooklyn woman was jailed awaiting arraignment after confessing to taking the infant.
Chicago police investigated a shooting at 7328 Maplewood Avenue involving William O'Brien a 27 year old county recorder clerk who was shot and possibly fatally wounded. Samuel Derr owner of the building denied involvement while Mrs O'Brien claimed she fired at her husband in a dispute then altered her account to say she was the shooter.
The Louisiana state penitentiary uncovered an organized narcotic traffic run by inmates led by Dutch Gardiner and Pleasant Harris. Warder McClanahan moved the two from easy posts at the receiving station to the Angola penal farm after evidence of the dope ring emerged. The men allegedly used gifts to keep quiet staff and distributed narcotics to prisoners inside the walls. CONTINUED ON PAGE SIXTEEN.
John C. McGoulderick, second officer of the Creole, was nolled on charges of murdering Jack Kraft, who disappeared from the ship near New Orleans on October 11. Plaquemines Parish District Attorney Leander Perez said the case lacked sufficient witnesses to proceed. Gloria Rouzer, identified as Jane Orde, testified as a material witness and expressed happiness at the release.
John M. Julian a veteran of both the Confederate and Union armies has died in Cleveland Tennessee at age 87. His long military service spanned both Civil War sides reflecting a rare cross era record.

Temporary closing of the Ford Motor Company assembling plant in Denver has laid off 800 employees. Officials said the shutdown allows dealers to reduce on hand stocks and the order affects 34 other branch plants nationwide.
A Louisville and Nashville passenger train struck a Chevrolet coach at Lindsay crossing two miles south of Lafollette Tennessee. A family of five from Turley was killed including W. F. Metchler his wife the son and two young daughters.

Six jurors were selected at noon for the sanity trial of Irston Bo Webb and Joe Winn both Negroes accused in the slaying of Bob Lee a white man. Jurors chosen are FE E Jacob Jeff Fontenot Judd Lloyd EB CG Oliphant R E McLennon and J F Colson. The regular jury venire of twenty was reported.
Five women were killed when their auto collided with a Santa Fe train on East Grand avenue near White Rock Lake during a blinding snowstorm. A male driver identified as Rabbit Gatt from Leonard Texas was hospitalized before regaining consciousness.

Senator Ransdell said two transcontinental air mail routes across Louisiana may be created, including the existing New Orleans line. Secretary McClary of the Chamber of Commerce heads to Washington for interdepartmental talks on regional air mail, with Ransdell expected to push for the northern Louisiana route via Monroe due to fog and weather on the southern New Orleans path.
New Orleans November 21. The Louisiana flood control commission will meet tonight at its bank office to prepare matters for Major General Lytle Brown chief of army engineers at tomorrow's conference. A D Danziger announced General Brown has agreed to attend and will be honored at a banquet tomorrow night.
Senator Warren III Francis E Warren of Wyoming, a Republican, has been seriously ill with bronchitis at his Washington home.
Thomas J. Hunt an electrician for the Illinois Central Railroad at the Monroe shops died this morning of heart failure while being transported to a hospital. He had been in good health aside from occasional neuritis and left his home at 604 Louisville Avenue in his usual condition.

Reports from St Johns and Truro say a tidal wave following Monday's earthquake struck the Burin peninsula with 28 deaths confirmed and up to 34 feared. Eleven houses and 16 residents were swept into the sea at Burin, while other drownings were reported along southern Newfoundland but not yet confirmed. The coastal communities of Burin Lamarine and St Lawrence lie within 30 miles of the affected area.
