Ex convict James C Payne opened fire at Breda home during an attempt to abduct his four year old daughter Dolores. Four adults were wounded two critically two less seriously. Police say Payne led officers on an eight mile chase at speeds up to eighty five.
Planes from Barksdale field searched Monroe and surrounding area for two Shreveport airmen missing since Saturday evening. Scott Robertson Jr., 46, and C. J. Henderson Jr., were en route home from Miami and last sighted north of Vicksburg. CAA radio station at Municipal Airport helped coordinate the search.
Maurice Eugene Clark of New Orleans spent 64.55 on his independent bid against incumbent F Edward Hebert and Dennison Suarez in Louisiana's first district. Hebert won 29 329 votes to Suarez 2 614, Clark calling election expenses evidence that quackocracy is too costly. He mailed copies to Truman and federal lawmakers and Louisiana officials.
President Truman relaxed from the coal crisis with a Florida day of swimming and sunbathing at the Officers Club pool and a beach visit. He read Harold Lamb’s Life Of Alexandria and signed no new coal instructions while aboard his Florida visit.
The sugar committee of the food industry council backs a gradual shift from control to decontrol to avoid wartime price chaos. It warns instant decontrol could spike prices to 1919 levels and projects a 40 percent rise in home sugar for 1947, with 27 percent for institutional and industrial users. Interim allocations should be minimal and no firm foreign commitments made.
President Philip Murray opened the Eighth C I O convention in Atlantic City with a focus on a wage drive. He blamed industrialists for last winter's strikes and warned against Communist influence, urging unity and stronger organizing and political action. The anti Communist declaration was endorsed by the executive board and set the tone for the convention.

Baton Rouge reports a Civil War diary kept by Rev. Mathew D. Thomason of Mobile recounting Confederate prices for eggs at $2 a dozen coffee at $3.50 a pound butter and bacon at $1.50 soap 60 cents a pound. The diary notes rural markets sold cheaply while larger towns charged higher rates.
Two New Orleans detectives return from Douglas Georgia with Leroy Henderson 33 wanted for questioning in the razor slaying of Reba Louise Henderson 24. His father James Henderson 57 reportedly turned up in West Green Georgia but left by train.
Washington reports signs that President Truman will face difficulty securing united Democratic support for his legislative agenda in the new Republican-dominated Congress. Democrats plan to let Truman craft the party program in the State of the Union while Southern members resist Roosevelt era leftovers such as anti poll tax and anti lynching measures.

A federal judge issued a temporary order restraining John L. Lewis and the United Mine Workers from breaching the Krug-Lewis agreement as thousands of soft coal miners walk out. The order bars termination of the government wage contract and stops actions that could disrupt bituminous mines under government control. Hearings set for November 27.

Atlanta authorities report Quillan Daniel a 28 year old farmhand confessed to killing W. A. Carnes 43 and Mrs Walter S. Webb 35 last Thursday night on a lone road near Royston Georgia. He said Carnes warned him not to talk about seeing them together and that Mrs Webb was unintentionally shot while in the car.
