Hundreds of educators arrive in Monroe to attend Friday sessions of the Louisiana Teachers Association. All day voting for officers dominates the agenda while sectional meetings and campaign activity unfold at the Hotel Frances.
Tonight at Hotel Frances L S A alumni banquet opens at 6 00 p m followed by a Tulane Newcomb alumni gathering and a Louisiana Tech event also at 6 00 p m The fourth general session convenes at 7 3 p m at When Saturday arrives a ninth general session is scheduled for 9 00 a m at Hotel Frances with further campus meetings.
Candidates for president are A. G. Townsend, Ruston high school principal, and E. B. Robert, Louisiana State Normal college faculty. Townsend ticket includes Miss Maggie Hawes, J. E. Harper, and W. B. Glover. Robert ticket lists Miss Aimee de Graffenreid, Joe Farrar, and O. E. Huey with R. H. Agate mentioned as the only other name.
Washington November 18 Chairman Pou of the house rules committee said he hopes to see modification of the Volstead act at the short session. The North Carolina Democrat leads the committee with influence over what the house acts on and aims to cooperate with Democratic pledges. Poll, dean of the house, voted against the 18th amendment and the Volstead act while backing prohibition in North Carolina.
About 1,500 members of the Louisiana Traders association gathered in Monroe for the 40th annual convention. Hotel France hosted the event with bustling crowds and displays of schoolroom supplies. George Everett drew attention, while Dr E L Stephens delivered a spirited address despite rain and sleet. The crowd enjoyed a lively dance, marking a big night for the convention.
In Toronto two sisters Emma and Amelia Richardson aged 76 and 73 were found dead in an old Victorian house after a gas leak is suspected. Neighbors rarely saw them since 1902 when they isolated themselves after their father's death and a grocer’s boy alerted police.
Samuel P. Weston, expert on newspaper operations, predicts a general forward trade and market movement by early December based on October classified advertising lineage in 52 major cities. He notes October 1932 lineages rose 89 percent from October 1928 and 41 percent from October 1931, urging awareness of differing 1928 and 1932 business conditions as a factor in the forecast.
The house committee on campaign expenditures continued hearings on alleged election irregularities in Philadelphia recounting vote buying intimidation and illegal voter assistance. Lt. Col. J. N. Hodges announced a Baton Rouge sub-office for flowage control under Captain H. B. Vaughan with 15 staff. The site will operate indefinitely while dredging progresses along the Mississippi from Vicksburg to the mouth and on the Atchafalaya from Simmsport to Morgan City with three dredges in use and more expected.
Berlin reports the aging President von Hindenburg bears the burden of Germanys domestic crisis as he begins efforts to form a national concentration government after Franz von Papens Junker cabinet resignations. He will meet leaders Alfred Hugenburg Eduard Dingledey Ludwig Kaas and Adolf Hitler with plans to create a cabinet he alone would appoint. The Reichstag remains deadlocked with no clear majority and communists excluded from talks.
In New Orleans traders paused their business to honor Col. Henry G. Hester on his 86th birthday. As secretary and superintendent since 1870, he is famed as a leading cotton authority who has never bought or sold a cotton future. His 62 years on the floor show steady attendance.
Denver M. Wright of St. Louis a manufacturer who led the failed home made lion hunt in Mississippi County recently arrived in Poplar Bluff for a quail hunt. He departed early today with two small lion cubs in his party and his role remained unannounced.
Lowered temperatures and rain with a few flakes of snow fell this morning in Monroe, signaling a gloomy outlook for the Twin Cities. Hail overnight gave way to intermittent rain, with a warmer, fair day promised Saturday and frost expected along the coastal region. Miss Kate Key records 35 degrees minimum and 44 degrees maximum in the 24 hours ending 7 am.
In Wilder Tennessee Adjutant General W C Boyd said a decision on ordering armed state forces into the coal mine strike area will come from Governor Horton. He noted a Tennessee Central railway trestle was dynamited after coal trains left the area and mentioned recent non union mining. The supreme court barred militia use in such cases but guardsmen could join a state police if needed.
Amy Johnson lands at Cape Town in Desert Cloud after flying from England to beat her husband J A Mollison’s distance record by about eleven hours. The 6,250 mile journey with four stops faced oil line trouble and heavy rain but she completed the route in 4 days 6 hours 55 minutes amid cheering crowds and police concerns.
Broadway columnist Ward Morehouse reports Libby Holman will return to the stage in mid January after giving birth to her baby. He notes she left Monthanin Delaware with her father Alfred Holman and Mrs. Jenney and traveled to Maryland following the murder indictment of her husband Smith Reynolds.
Oklahoma City reports the state Court of Appeals affirmed Nathan Rightsell’s death sentence for murdering special railroad officer J W Buchanan in Hugo. Rightsell, who escaped from the Louisiana penitentiary, shot the officer during a search attempt and fled to Muskogee where he wounded another officer. The advisory ruling also affects Proctor McDonald, Ordered to die Jan 6 for killing Raymond Butler during an Oilton holdup.
Beaumont dispatch reports hunters and trappers in the High Island marshes search for M W Hargrove missing since Tuesday after L H Bond Jr died from exposure during duck hunting. Airplanes from the Beaumont and Galveston areas scouted the marshes. a Galveston coast guard cutter investigated navigable bayous with no luck. Officials fear drowning and say locating the body may take days.
President Hoover and President-Elect Roosevelt prepared for a White House meeting to set the government’s stance on wartime debt payments from Europe. Franklin D. Roosevelt, aided by Raymond Moley, joined by Mills in later talks, weighed extensions and budget plans ahead of March 4.
Chicago police hunt a 17 year old escapee from the Dixon epileptic school for the slaying of motorist Frank Jordan and the kidnapping and assault of Miss Lillian Henry niece of former Police Commissioner John Alcock. Descriptions match James Varecha who fled the state school last August.
A mistrial was declared in the Ilaw Elmore case after the jury could not reach a verdict on the murder of Ted Reiser in his garage apartment last August 26. Foreman Harry Bailey reported the deadlock to Judge J. T. Shell as Elmore's family reacted with emotion. Other defendants include Roy Smith and Mrs. Frank Manley, with Garrett as district attorney.
Boise reports a red squill bulb from the biological survey station and Denver tests that it poisons rats while harming other animals. The bulb resembles a small orange red tulip bulb three to five inches long and works by causing violent irritation when eaten, leading to death.
Columbus reports Ohio leads in enacting laws that bar women from many occupations. Chief Edgar Brill notes prohibitions include taxi driving bell hopping express driving and work in rail yard watchman roles and blast furnaces. Other limits apply to shoe parlors bowling alleys pool rooms and saloons serving intoxics.
