A Westbrook Pegler column attacks Truman for opposing Taft Hartley, labeling it a slave labor law and accusing him of exploiting voter stupidity. The piece argues Dewey avoided tough debate to not challenge the public’s ability to discern truth from lies and praises the superior, law abiding citizen.
Washington speculates W Averell Harriman may replace Paul Hoffman as ECA administrator or serve as ECA special representative in Europe after Truman signals support. Vice-President-Elect Alben W Barkley will fly to Washington after an overnight in Palm Beach Florida with friend H Perry. He traveled from Miami after a Key West drive with Democratic leader J Howard McGrath and Leslie L Biffle. Attorney General Tom Clark met them at the airport. Barkley called the visit social with no political significance. Perry publishes the Jacksonville Journal and other papers.
About 1 000 railroad workers were laid off as the longshoremen strike tightens its grip. The Queen Elizabeth and other ships are dock bound, with Canadian ports boycotting diverted vessels. Trade unions and railroads warn of further layoffs if the walkout lasts.
Official results show the first nine constitutional proposals defeated by about 19,577 votes on average while Thurmond trailed Truman in a tight presidential race. In the Third district Willis led Duke. Amendment No. 3 suffered the largest loss. No. 13 enjoyed the strongest support.
Rep. J. Parnell Thomas of New Jersey pleads innocent to federal charges accusing him of conspiring to pad his office pay. The arraignment and fingerprinting occurred in Washington with a $1,000 bond. Trial set for January 10. preliminary motions due November 29. His secretary Helen Campbell faces arraignment.
The Chinese government claimed a major victory on the Suchow front as the battle for the approach to Nanking remained in doubt. Posters and firecrackers highlighted alleged Communist routs northeast of Suchow, while other sources suggested government control of the area was shaky and the U.S. warned citizens to leave China.
President Truman told the American Federation of Labor he would enlarge the labor department and back a program of legislation for all the people. He praised the AFL's past work and urged continued unity while noting a restored department of labor.
Francis Laverne Vines, 16, pleaded guilty in district court to the murder of B. F. Shepperd, a 70 year old West Monroe farmer. Judge Garrett imposed life imprisonment with hard labor, noting Louisiana law's mandatory sentence for juveniles on capital charges. Sheriff Bailey Grant said fines will be transferred to Angola in a few days.
London reports reveal Princess Elizabeth and her two day old son are in satisfactory condition. Buckingham Palace says no new bulletins will be issued today as relatives visit, including six year old Prince William of Gloucester and Queen Mother Mary, the great grandmother.
Republican leaders urged President Truman to take the initiative in expanding U S aid to nationalist China as the Chinese crisis deepens. Senator Wiley proposed a joint session of Senate and House foreign affairs committees to review China policy, while Bridges urged a special session of the 20th Congress, a plan Truman was not expected to back.
Arizona national committeeman Clarence Budington Kelland demands firing the Albany group from party control over the GOP. He accuses the Dewey campaign of arrogance and calls for a quick meeting to reshuffle top committee officials. A national meeting is planned after the new year to air views and possibly rebuild with new leadership.
President Truman said the United States will not resume four power negotiations on Germany until the Soviet Union lifts the Berlin blockade. He will review the international situation November 22 with Secretary Marshall and Harri man. He has no plan to meet Stalin or send an emissary to Moscow. He urged Hoover to continue the bipartisan executive branch commission to foster efficient government while confirming Marshall remains in place.
The United Nations Security Council ordered Arabs and Jews to establish an immediate armistice in Palestine to ease transition to permanent peace. The vote split with Russia and Soviet Ukraine abstaining, while the original Canadian backed text passed after rejecting a Syrian amendment expanding withdrawal.
Russia stands by its demand to include Germany in any Berlin negotiations. Western powers report unity on lifting the Berlin blockade before talks. A. Y. Visinsky signed Moscow’s reply to Lie and Evatt, stressing personal trust and a council of foreign ministers to discuss Berlin and Germany.
In Korea a Korean army spokesman reported remnants of Communist led rebels from the Yosu Sunchon uprising may number 300 near Kurye. Police and soldiers pursued another suspected group in Kangwon province within 20 miles of the border, with authorities noting reports of armed bands and rifles. The outcry over revolt is disputed by American commanders.
At the National Grange meeting in Portland the agriculture committee urged full industry output to sustain farm prosperity and rejected a cash subsidy approach. It favored price supports and crop controls only as last resorts to curb surpluses and price collapses, opposing J W Fichters plan to remove all supports.
Seven North Dakota dentists report using psychosomatic sleep or hypnosis as an anesthetic with 97 percent effectiveness from trials on 250 patients since February. The method, developed with Dr. Thomas P. Burgess of Concordia College, is described as safe and voluntary with full patient control.
