Washington sources report two conflicting blocs urge President Truman to either remove Dean Acheson or keep him in place to protect foreign policy and political interests. Truman publicly backs Acheson, while Democratic insiders argue he is a political liability after election reverses. Acheson says he has no plan to resign.
Washington reports a new Republican committee to organize the 1952 senatorial campaign as the 82nd Congress convenes. Senate numbers show 49 Democrats and 47 Republicans with several seats at stake. Funeral for J. C. Gresham 61 superintendent of Louisiana Training Institute will be conducted Thursday at 3 p.m. at Hixson Brothers Funeral Chapel with Rev. James T. Horton officiating. Interment in Riverview Burial Park. Gresham, a former Rayville Grammar School principal, died of a heart attack after driving to a Monroe hospital. He was active in Lions Club Masonic Lodge and the First Baptist Church of Monroe. Surviving are his wife a son four brothers and two sisters.
Montgomery, Nov 15. Extradition papers for U S Senator Glen Taylor Idaho were in Governor Folsoms hands but unlikely to be acted on. Folsom called the 1948 Birmingham disorderly conduct conviction political persecution and declined extradition. Taylor got six months in jail and a $100 fine after a scuffle at a Negro youth congress meeting doorway. The conviction was upheld by the Alabama Court of Appeals and the U S Supreme Court refused review.
Reverend Carlos Karlos Smith longtime West Monroe pastor 1936 to 1942 died after long illness at Mobile Marine Hospital Alabama. His Magnolia Springs home survives wife Zoe Smith son Claude Smith New Orleans daughter Mrs. Jimmy Coleman Magnolia Springs and two grandchildren.
A Gulf Oil refinery near Port Arthur Texas was rocked by seven explosions starting around midnight, injuring three men two of them seriously with two others treated for minor injuries. Firefighting units from multiple cities battled fires and a large catalytic cracking unit was shut down with return possible by Monday or Tuesday.
Rep. Gathings of Arkansas says the Agriculture Department may raise the 1949 act’s 90 percent parity based support to secure a 16 million bale 1951 crop. He notes a high price is needed to convince farmers to expand acreage, with current parity about 31.87 cents and market cotton above 40 cents.
Detroit reports the Michigan gubernatorial contest remains unresolved as Democrat G. Mennen Williams leads by 1,152 votes after statewide tallies. A recount looms amid questions whether Williams can be inaugurated January 1, with both parties preparing election challenges and legal steps.
An Oslo bound express from Kristiansand collided with a loose freight car on the Oslo Kristiansand line near Hjukseboe, 82 miles north of Oslo. About 10:45 a m. emergency squads from Kristiansand and Drammen assisted, first coach demolished, twenty people believed killed or injured.
A navy twin engine transport from New Orleans, en route to Lincoln Neb, crashes on Rich Mountain near Page, Okla. Six men die, five in the wreckage, one nearby. Three officers from New Orleans and two reserve officers from Shreveport are named among the dead. Lt Comdr Irvin H. McPherson and Lt Comdr Alfred G. Epp are listed with homes in Glen Ellyn and New Orleans respectively.
Crowley Louisiana November 15 operators at the Southern Bell exchange refuse to cross a Western Electric picket line and half the local staff are idle. C H Ray chairman of local 406 CWA CIO Lafayette said the outage will likely end tonight as supervisory staff from Lafayette man the switchboards.
Secretary of the Treasury Snyder urged a 75 percent excess profits tax on corporations to fund defense and meet Truman’s request for a $4 billion annual levy. He backed a base period earnings or invested capital credit to apply the regular corporate rate up to 45 percent and tax the excess at 75 percent, arguing a robust profits levy is essential for inflation control.
Washington November 15 The attempt by two Puerto Rican revolutionaries to shoot President Truman led to tighter security unseen even in wartime. Blair House is roped off West Executive avenue blocked to traffic and adjacent buildings bought. Secret Service and police swelled the White House guard as Truman cooperates, accepting safety steps beyond his preference.
In Seoul on November 15 AP reports Red battalions smashed two UN sectors. Communist forces pushed the ROK Eighth Division back about four miles near Tokchon on the western front, marking a sharp back-and-forth in ongoing clashes along the line.
Police faced massed pickets at Philadelphia Broad and Rockland Bell exchange as about 250 protesters blocked entry. After five minutes, police punched a wedge, about 15 workers slipped in, and reinforcements were called as lines reformed. A group of young women cheered the picketers while the coast-to-coast strike neared a week’s end.
Washington reports the National Production Authority banned new construction of bars and saloons and added drinking venues to the defense list of amusements. Night clubs and premises selling alcoholic drinks for on site consumption are prohibited. The rule also covers structures like courses, pools, tennis courts and yacht basins costing over 5000 dollars in a year.
The second Community Chest report meeting drew over 50 division leaders at the Cameo room of the Virginia Hotel. Campaign chair W. L. Ethridge and cochairman Joe G. Durrett announced three new divisions led by Grady Hicks A B Clarkson ministers division led by Dr Ernest Holloway and Rev Roger Johnson. The Negro division under A A Buie and Lucious White met at Miller Roy building with high activity and a strong report expected. Three firms Monroe Hardware Sears Roebuck Montgomery Ward have 100 percent ratings. Ethridge thanked their firms and managers.
Tokyo reports B 29 Super Fortresses destroyed one MiG-15 and damaged another during a bomb run along the Yalu river boundary between Korea and Manchuria. Crews from two B 29s were wounded as both damaged jets made emergency landings in Korea. Escort F 80s could not separate the bombers from the Communist planes.
