Baton Rouge November 14 22 Louisiana 4 H club members will compete at the national 4 H congress in Chicago joining winners from state contests held at LSU's agriculture short course. The group plans to travel by train from Hammond on November 24 for events running November 25 to 30 with entrants from Osage Downsville West Monroe and other towns among the named participants.
Venezuela imposed a dusk to dawn curfew and closed borders after acting president Lt. Col. Carlos Delgado Chalbaud was assassinated. Six bullets killed Delgado as he was driven to the presidential house, Rafael Simon Urbina linked to the attack was arrested, and a state of siege was declared with warnings to foreigners.
Dudley J. Whitten, 45, of Monroe, died Monday night while en route to a Shreveport hospital after the auto he rode in collided with a mule on highway 71 near Coushatta. Two companions, both of Shreveport, were injured. Dr Sun Ray Cloud driver escaped with minor injuries. Mrs Bobbie Jean Robinson, 26, a Shreveport dentist's assistant, was the more seriously hurt. Hall Funeral Home planned to transfer Whitten to Monroe Tuesday for a Wednesday funeral, likely at 2 p.m., with Whitten's family not identified by Tuesday noon.
Chicago reports the season’s first cold snap broken as temperatures rise from the Rockies to the Atlantic coast. Some Midwest spots fell below freezing while readings trend higher over most of the nation. Early lows hit 15 above at Traverse City Michigan with fair skies across the eastern half and northern plains. Rain fell in South Texas and heavy rain hit California and the Pacific Northwest. San Diego saw over an inch in six hours. Snow occurred in higher elevations of Montana eastern Washington and eastern Oregon.
Miss Vivian Bourgeois of New Orleans and Miss Hazel Shively of Jonesville run for president of the Louisiana Educational Association. Van D. Odom, Haynesville elementary principal, is unopposed for vice president. About 1300 members will vote for 1950 51 officers at Monroe convention November 21 or by mail ballot.
Montgomery county District Attorney J Stroud Weber visited the Lewisburg federal penitentiary to view Clarence A Woodley Jr s confession regarding the December 8 1946 murder of Mrs Miriam Green in Pottsville Pa While Wentzel a Potts town civic leader has denied killing her his lawyers demand a share in Weber s probe of the prison confession and army authorities file Notes indicate Woodley a former soldier serving an eight year court martial for armed robbery in Germany made the statement while imprisoned in Germany and later turned over to county authorities Wentzel did not implicate Woodley and would not discuss the matter further
Admiral Chester Nimitz says Mao Zedong has 300000 to 500000 Chinese troops in Manchuria to shield the region from the Soviet Union and to secure hydro electric power from the Yalu. He compares Manchuria’s value to Europe’s Ruhr and notes China’s aim to improve the Chinese people's condition through Manchuria's output. Nimitz was visiting Tucson as a U N adviser.
Washington reports the army will call 40000 draftees in January, raising total wartime requisitions to 250000 since Korea began. The navy and air force rely on volunteers, with January limits due to training camp space. Most of the 210000 inductees by year end remain in basic four month training.
Isa bel Smith 40 secretary of the foreign relations committee and U S delegation attache was found dead in her sister s Columbus home after leaving a suicide note citing work strain. An autopsy was negative pending toxicology results. Her sister said she appeared reticent during a short visit from New York.
Ester Del Rosario Murray was found guilty of murdering her American husband George Murray who was shot in his sleep on August 13, 1949. Sentenced to life imprisonment, the verdict followed prosecutors alleging jealousy over his attentions to actress Carole Varga.
Honolulu reports Navy Secretary Francis P Matthews arrived en route to the Orient for a 20 day inspection of naval facilities. He will confer with Admiral Arthur W Radford Pacific fleet commander during a two hour stopover and then proceed to Manila Okinawa Tokyo and Korea.
Police in 13 states hunted for Eddie Collins six-year-old who vanished from Rife country school. Eddie, living with Roy E. Richwine Jr, faces possible adoption proceedings with the mother’s consent. District Attorney Mark noted uncertainty but possible kidnapping while more information awaited. Charles Collins believed in California.
In Altoona Pennsylvania a kerosene exploded in a wood stove killing 37 year old Nellie Ebbert and four of her children Evelyn 9 Joyce 8 Elaine 2 who died instantly. Neal Ebbert 12 died later in hospital. William Ebbert 40 Tommy 11 and grandmother Florence Ebbert were critically burned.
New York November 14 unanimous appellate division of the state supreme court affirmed Frank Erickson’s two year bookmaking sentence and $30,000 fine. Erickson, 54, had pleaded guilty to 59 counts of bookmaking and one conspiracy count, was sentenced seven days after his June 19 plea, and sent to Rikers Island.
Washington report details Taft claiming GOP can carry labor strongholds based on last Tuesday’s returns. He cites counties around Cleveland Cincinnati Columbus Toledo Akron Youngstown Dayton and Canton plus a 430000 vote re election margin. He compared favorably to New York Philadelphia Pittsburgh Chicago St Louis and questioned California gains.
In Miami on November 14 a six person jury convicted Marie Orr Betty Corrigan and Billie Ruth McNabb of smuggling coins from the Southern Bell counting room in their brasieres. The judge set sentencing for November 24 and the trio pledged restitution. Prosecutors said Orr and Corrigan faced grand larceny counts while McNabb helped smuggle quarters. Nine co defendants remain to be tried on receiving stolen property charges.
Los Angeles witnesses the senate crime investigating committee prepare to hear the story of Mickey Cohen in person as part of a nationwide push into organized crime. The panel will hold closed sessions Thursday and Friday and will call law enforcement officials and underworld figures as it probes syndicated crime across the country including Miami New York and Philadelphia. Chairman Kefauver will review Las Vegas with Tobey Wiley Halley and Robinson before the hearings move to San Francisco.

Major projects include Morehouse drainage gravel work awarded to Bacon Sand and Gravel Co and Monroe Sand and Gravel Co totaling 10 000 dollars. Pointe Coupee West Baton Rouge Iberville drainage structures awarded to Moreauville Concrete Works 25 083 dollars. St Martin Cade New Iberia concrete culvert contract awarded to Forcum James Co 11 451 dollars.
Grenoble France November 14 A Canadian air liner crashed into Mount L Obiou above the Isere river. Rescue crews reported no survivors among 58 passengers and crew, many pilgrims from Rome. Wreckage scattered across a 500 yard zone as guides battled snow and rain. Pope Pius XII prayers worded by a diary found near the scene. Ambulances stood by and officials prepared for body recovery at first light.
