Governor O K Allen announced that both sides will have representation at the polls on election day. The statement follows a dispute over Huey Long era laws that assign poll commissioner appointments to parish election boards.
Frank J. Navin 64 owner of the world champion Detroit Tigers died after a fall from a horse at the Detroit Riding and Hunt club. He collapsed on the bridle path and died within an hour pending determination of whether death came from a heart attack or injuries.
James H. Carr resigns as secretary of state on the eve of his impeachment trial over liquor licensing, with Governor Johnson saying the house will likely drop charges. Carr’s attorney cites his client’s innocence and ill health as reasons he cannot continue the fight. Sheriff George E. Saunders appointed to Carr’s office.
Death Valley Scotty opens his $2,381,000 castle but prefers sleeping on the desert rocks. After 35 years in Death Valley he boasts the rocks provide a better sleep than the Aladdin style bedroom. The article notes his hand carved bed, Spanish rugs, and ornate desk.
The Ouachita parish police jury reduced the 1936 budget to 108000 dollars from last year’s 117000, a 9000 dollar cut to curb expenses. Chairman C R Tidwell urged the reduction, which was approved unanimously, as road projects were sent to the roads committee chaired by A E Montgomery. Routine items filled the rest of the meeting.
George B. Holladay Jr., 35, of Camden Tennessee, has endured 15 abdominal operations since June 1934 and witnessed 13, sometimes with mirrors. He arrived at a Memphis hospital last January. five more operations have followed. Doctors predict at least three further procedures, mostly with spinal anesthesia.
Eleven southern states announced improved finances and higher revenues for 1935 with stable tax rates. Kentucky netted about 10 million from a 3% sales tax. Virginia benefited from liquor licensing. North Carolina and Virginia do not tax land. Arkansas sales tax began last July. Virginia total was about 39.95 million. South Carolina reduced unfunded debt. North Carolina relies on a 3% retail tax excluding milk.
A Jackson county grand jury was summoned to re investigate the Scottsboro case five years after nine accused black men faced charges of attacking two white women on a Southern railway freight train. Judge A E Hawkins, who sentenced eight of the nine to death in 1931, called the panel after a new jury roll and venue review. Lieutenant Governor Thomas E Knight Jr named special prosecutor to address potential constitutional issues from prior trials.
Jackson Mississippi November 13 Attorneys for Ouida Keeton 33 appeal to the Mississippi Supreme Court seeking to overturn a life sentence for the Laurel matron’s murder of her mother Mrs Daisy Keeton The 190 page brief was filed as part of the Jones County circuit court case though arguments are not expected before January Also on appeal is W M Carter 68 a Laurel businessman convicted and sentenced to life after Ouida testified against him Both defendants are free on 10000 bonds.
In Ripley West Virginia on November 13 J Fulton Gunnoe 45 a CCC camp foreman and war veteran died in a flaming accident when a tree limb killed him. James Elliott a startled farmer saw flames at Gunnoe s window and found the burning body hanging from a tree before reporting to state police.
In Baton Rouge 13 candidates vie for the unexpired term of the late Huey P Long. Gov O K Allen, Frank J Looney, and Irving Ward-Steinman join the race along with others for the short term in the Democratic primary.
Alexis North Carolina Nov 13 eight children of Mr and Mrs Hough Cunningham farm family were burned to death when a two story rented dwelling burned at the Pres Stroupe farm near Alexis. The ages ranged from a few months to 22 years. Cunningham was burned trying to warn them while his wife escaped unharmed. Bodies recovered morning most charred beyond recognition. The family had rented the farm for about six months.
Washington Nov. 13 The Roosevelt administration faces decisions on extending or ending several New Deal experiments due to expire in 1936. Key items include devaluing the dollar, a $2 billion stabilization fund, and the vast Home Owners Loan Corp. No clear plan has been announced as the president says the emergency phase has passed, though programs like the AAA are to continue beyond emergency needs. Continued on Third Page.
AP reports an unwelcome turn as Italian columns move toward Harar and Jijiga. Northern forces occupy new ground while a motorized force circles the Ethiopian left wing on the southern front.
The Louisiana crime bureau asks officers to pursue two swindlers described as about 40 years old and stout who prey on the elderly in rural areas posing as eye specialists. One victim in Union Parish lost 470 dollars and another in Livingston Parish suffered a similar loss.
Fifty survivors were rescued from the freighter Silver Hazel after four days at sea following a Sunday night crash in the San Bernardino Straits. Two people died, including passenger Mrs. Neil Williams, and apprentice seaman Bernard C. MacPherson, with Captain H. A Lennard and an unidentified seaman missing. Navy ships and searchers continued to scour treacherous waters as three sailors were praised for rescue efforts aboard the destroyer Peary.
In Lake Charles Louisiana on November 13 testimony in a federal court injunction case disclosed organized plans to kill workers opposing the strike by the International Longshoremen's Association. A gun battle erupted between ILA pickets and guards protecting non ILA workers leaving three guards dead and seven wounded. The National Stevedore Company and Lake Charles stevedores filed for the injunction to stop ILA interference with non ILA labor. Cam Newman a former ILA foreman testified during the hearing.
In New Orleans two men Harvey Bannister and Samuel Higginbotham face murder charges after the fatal stabbing of Oscar Upchurch at a party. A third man Forrest Bianchihini is charged with cutting with intent to murder over a separate saloon brawl injuring Lee Richeaux. Ten witnesses are detained.
In Tientsin a well dressed Chinese woman killed Marshal Sun Chuan Fang at a Buddhist meeting. She fired a revolver, then surrendered to police. Sun, a former powerful warlord and opponent of the Nanking government, was linked to a possible future move for north China. The assassin is reported to be the daughter of the late Gen. Chung Pin, whom Sun had executed.
A mob of about 700 people including several women hanged two African American youths, Ernest Collins 15 and Benny Mitchell 16, in Columbus Texas after they allegedly confessed to killing Geraldine Kollmann 19, a high school graduate. Officers were forced to surrender the youths who were taken to a live oak tree and hanged despite pleas to let the law run its course.
Abraham L. Shushan a Huey Long ally filed 190000 bond before Rufus Fontenot acting collector of internal revenue pending appeal from jeopardy assessments of about 95000 against him and his wife. Fontenot accepted the bond but did not reveal the bonding company name. Shushan, fiscal agent for Long's faction, was recently acquitted of criminal income tax evasion. The jeopardy assessments cover back income taxes interests and penalties.
Major Angas declares America has at last turned the corner after a cautious economic survey. He addresses bankers outlining a hopeful outlook and steady recovery signals across key industries.
Major L L B Angas, British economist and author, spoke at the 61st American Bankers Association convention in New Orleans. He forecast an immediate U S boom spanning trade and heavy industry, saying America has turned the corner and that fears of elections or foreign wars will not hinder a tidal wave of recovery.
New York officials rushed to indict Vera Stretz after the fatal shooting of Dr. Fritz Gebhardt a German industrialist and economist. The 31 year old ash blond made no comment after a night in jail as her lawyer and police weigh jealousy as a motive. Gebhardt had a wife and two children in Karlsruhe, Germany, and reportedly told Stretz that their engagement could end.
In St Bernard Parish Louisiana Judge Claude Meraux weighs mandamus petitions from 11 anti administration candidates. Most were barred for faulty registrations. William Saunders Jr is barred for prohibition law violation. A candidate for sheriff contends his registration card was tampered with and birth date altered.
