In Washington the government deployed 100 inspectors and 60 chemists to test cranberries for contamination by a weed killer. Dufort said sprayed berries won’t reach markets until FDA approval. Harvests were nearly complete in Oregon coastal bogs with some fresh berries already going out.
The Navy ordered global commands to stop serving cranberries suspected of a cancer risk. The Army and Air Force were expected to follow. Only cranberries clearly marked as from Washington or Oregon or unidentified origins are blocked. products from other regions may still be issued.
Oregon producers protest unsprayed berries and demand action after secretary Flemming’s health scare conference. Ambrose Stevens of the National Cranberry Assn warns the move could jeopardize a 50 million dollar industry.
Detroit AP reports General Motors will suspend all car production for an indeterminate period due to a steel shortage. The last car, a Corvair, will roll from Willow Run at 10 p.m. The shutdown could last at least four weeks, with about 220,000 workers laid off and only nonproduction duties or early 1961 model prep remaining.

Defense lawyer Rupert Ringold says he will ask Judge Rodgers to move Goldsby’s second trial if the indictment isn’t killed. Negro attorney George Layton will seek to quash on jury service grounds, claiming no Negroes were available, though some are now. The case, tied to the 1954 killing of Mrs. Bryant Nelms in Vaiden, drew highway patrols and expects Jackson prosecutors.
Ouachita Parish jurors created two committees in a pre election meeting to oversee Cheniere Lake development and the Detention Home. The seven man panel includes district and city judges and M W Montgomery. Ollie Carter and L B Pettit were elected to serve. A resolution approved joining the U S Department of Agriculture fire and eradication program at 75 cents per acre. Routine actions included Dr W L Spencer named to the health board and a study for a future health unit site.
A two day fundraising bazaar will be held today and tomorrow in St. Matthew's school gymnasium. Sponsored by the four Catholic parishes in Monroe the event raises funds for the Daughters of the Cross. St Vincent's graduates will teach in Monroe area parochial schools.
About three hundred Indian students marched through New Delhi demanding Prime Minister Nehru dismiss Defense Minister V. K. Krishna Menon. The protest followed Indian press criticism of Menon linking his leftist views with border tensions with Red China as he returned from the U N Assembly in New York where he failed to block a resolution condemning China's Tibet suppression.
Cub Scout Pack 231 welcomed seventeen new members yesterday and established a new Webelos den. James Henry served as assistant cub. Continued on page A.
A Soviet astronomer Fensenkov, via Budapest's Peter Hedervari, reports the earth sheds about 11,000 tons of air daily into space. The tail, likened to a comet's, points away from the sun due to solar radiation, while total atmosphere remains about five trillion tons.
Washington AP reports investigator Richard N. Goodwin, who exposed quiz show rigging, defends writing a Life magazine piece about the inquiry and accepting payment. He says he did not reveal inside information and had permission from the committee chair.
North Dakota officials plan another hearing after an earlier session failed to resolve charges. Four unclothed youths ages 14 to 16 were reportedly chained to the floor at the North Dakota Training School during a repair period. Superintendent Thomas Crouse did not testify, prompting calls for accountability and a search for witnesses. State Senator Ralph Eriestad called the treatment unacceptable and said the board would pursue the matter with legal counsel present.
Four Mesa, Arizona residents perished when their Beechcraft Bonanza crashed four miles north of Madill Oklahoma. The single engine plane departed Springfield Missouri Tuesday afternoon en route to Abilene Texas and ran out of fuel after failing to arrive. The victims were Rogers Scarbrough 40 Richard Scarbrough 41 Patricia Anderson Scarbrough 35 and Mrs. R. G. Scarbrough. Both Oklahoma and Texas patrols joined a search for the Beechcraft which had five hours of fuel.
A two PM parade through Monroe and West Monroe will mark Veterans Day with entries from Neville High Ouachita Parish High West Monroe High schools and ROTC units. The L B Faulk Post plans a barbecue after the parade with 800 tickets issued as local offices close for the holiday.
Marine Sgt. William H. West formerly of West Monroe Louisiana and Johnson City Tennessee was killed instantly when his car struck a tree near Johnson City. Police say he may have lost control or fallen asleep at the wheel. He was alone and survived by his widow Jean Gonzales West of Johnson City a son William Jr and his parents and siblings. Funeral planned in Monroe.
London AP reports Moscow radio says Lunik II's orbit is shifting due to solar gravity and the Soviet moon rocket will burn up in the earth's atmosphere about next March. Lunik, noted for first photos of the moon's far side, launched Oct. 4 and completes a 15 day orbit.
London AP report says a wartime diary alleges an Irish airman saved Churchill on a 1943 flight by providing oxygen during pneumonia. Lord Moran dismisses the claim as hot air, noting Churchill was recovering and not in danger.
Gray skies and light rain covered northeast Louisiana with cooler air on the way. The previous day reached 70 degrees at Selman Field, with a 50 degree low, while a cold front was due to pass Monroe this evening dropping temps to 44 to 48. Tomorrow's high should reach 64.

James W. Moore announces two more firms joined the 100 percent honor roll for the United Givers Fund, bringing total to 75 as Life Insurance Company of Georgia and McLemore's Jitney Jungle in West Monroe pledged full employee giving. He notes momentum waning as pledges lag behind last year, jeopardizing the $225,919.72 goal. Other 100 percent contributors listed include Bancroft Paper Company Saul Adler Garage Alton Box and Board First Finance and Thrift West Monroe police department Monroe Cab Company Carver Elementary School.
