Charles Sartalamacchia, fifteen, pleaded innocent in St. Bernard parish district court to murdering his next door neighbor Fauldes Landry Jr. The body of six year old Landry was found in a woods thicket behind the Sartalamacchia home in Violet on July 23.
More than 300 delegates from the Louisiana Federation of Women’s Clubs registered at the Francis Hotel for the forty-ninth annual federation convention. The opening board meeting set the three day program with Mayor George C. Breece to welcome the group at the junior night program. Wade O. Martin will deliver the evening keynote on Training for Citizenship. Friday features Dr. Claybrook Cottingham and Shelby Jackson on Educational topics as American Education Week is observed. Various guests will attend a banquet honoring Mrs. Levy with introductions of national and state club leaders.
American and British planes continued the Berlin airlift along 20 mile corridors despite Soviet threats to force down any aircraft straying from the routes. Gen Lucius D. Clay pledged they would keep the airlift flying, with allies saying Moscow would be held responsible for any action. Some officials see the note as a nerve war move, while others warn the airlift could face earlier threats of action.

Hollywood reports an open network war as NBC and CBS lure Jack Benny with offers reportedly reaching 4 million dollars. Benny’s lawyer says no deal is done while CBS brings in William Paley to bolster its position as both sides trade high profile program moves and past coups in a media battle.
Senator Elbert Thomas would chair the labor and foreign relations panels with Dems backing votes to repeal Taft Hartley. The plan seeks an 8 to 5 Democratic edge on key committees, reshaping Senate influence as Truman pushes his program.
The agriculture department raised its 1948 production outlook with a corn crop of 3.65 billion bushels, a record surpassing 1946 and the October forecast. It forecasts meat supplies in 1949 to be modest, with pork expanding and cattle slaughter down, and grain-fed cattle improving beef quality.
Highs and lows varied with a nationwide cool air mass. Readings were generally below normal from the Mississippi east to the Atlantic, with the Rocky Mountain and Midwest regions notably cool. Government spokesman Teng Wen Yi says Reds outnumber government troops at the Suchow line and both sides commit reinforcements as casualties rise. Martial law in Nanking and Shanghai ends food riots. shops reopen.
Longshoremen's walks cripple East and West Coast ports including New York Philadelphia and Boston delaying ships and cargo. Up to 10 000 of 25 000 longshoremen joined the strike as ships idle from Alaska to Mexico and passenger movements adjust to diverted sailings and rail transfers.
United Nations delegates feel Armistice Day could signal an end to the east west cold war. Secretary of State Marshall may meet President Truman in Washington for a broad policy review, while Moscow reports spark talk of a Stalin meeting. White House says no Truman Stalin plans exist.
National Grange leaders at its 82nd annual convention in Portland forecast a sharp fight in congress over drastic revisions to the long term farm price support law. They warned President Truman and the agriculture department would oppose Cooley’s plan to revise parity and shift to flexible support starting in 1950.
The new St. Joseph home for the aged on Forsythe avenue and Sterlington road will be formally consecrated and opened Sunday at 3 p.m. Bishop Charles P. Greco will lead an elaborate public ceremony. A Mother Superior from Springfield, Illinois, who helped oversee construction will attend, and the public is invited.
