President Roosevelt and a crowd of dignitaries gather at Arlington National Cemetery to honor unknown soldiers. The ceremony begins after 11 AM with prayers and the playing of taps. Delegations from patriotic groups arrive as veterans and citizens pay tribute.
Reporters say Kingsford Smith and co pilot Tom Pethbridge are missing after a England to Australia flight now pushed with renewed effort. Royal air force bombers are instructed to skim islands and coastlines from the western Malay peninsula to the Bay of Bengal as C James Melrose reports sightings and suggests a landing possible on a moonlit uninhabited island.
The Most Rev. Philip R. McDevitt bishop of the Harrisburg diocese for 19 years died at 4 15 am after a week of illness from pneumonia. He celebrated his golden ordination anniversary last July and could not attend the mass for the new auxiliary bishop George A Leech. He was consecrated bishop on September 21 1916 and previously served in Philadelphia.
In Pall Mall Tennessee on Armistice Day 11 November, Sergeant Alvin C. York notes that he rarely shows his medals, kept locked in a safe. He recalls the day he killed 25 Germans and captured 132, with many visiting to see his decorations. The veteran points to the contrast between public pride and private protection of his honors.
The Mississippi Supreme Court reversed a life sentence for 50 year old Jasper county farmer George Jackson and remanded for a new trial over the alleged murder of his 11 year old daughter Hester Jackson. The case drew wide attention as the "pea" incident in the state.
Julius Wendling a 42 year old oil company accountant shot and killed Miss Mae Ethel Saucier 26 as she was leaving a bus. He then fled hid in his office for hours and wounded himself in the abdomen. He said I was drunk and I shot her. I was in love with her.
In Harrisonburg Va Judge John Paul ruled the amended Frazier Lemke farm mortgage act unconstitutional in a Western District Virginia decision. The Sherman family sought to keep their Frederick County apple orchard under the act while creditors led by Senator Harry Flood Byrd challenged the move. The ruling overturns the act as applied to the Shermans.
E G Bennett head of 28 Utah and Idaho banks told the American Bankers association conference in New Orleans that small banks in the United States have never been in better shape. Bennett, president of First Security Corp of Ogden, voiced strong optimism about the sector’s future as the 61st annual ABA gathering opened.
All American financial and commodity markets were closed for Armistice Day November 11 while livestock markets remained open. European markets operated as usual.
The five Dionne quints were signed to star in a full length film. Ontario minister David A. Croll announced approval of a contract between Twentieth Century Fox and the girls’ guardians for a movie titled The Country Doctor. The picture will draw on the life of Dr. A. R. Dafoe.

Callicott was delivering newspapers when struck and funeral services were held in Batesville Miss.

Italian southern army under General Graziani moves toward the Addis Ababa to Djibouti rail line. Dispatches say Sas Baneh and Daggah Bur were occupied, crossing desert terrain toward Harrar, with Jijiga 100 miles away and the rail line within reach.
In New Orleans Oscar Louis Upchurch died after a party quarrel and another man was seriously wounded in a separate incident. Samuel Higginbotham and Harvey Bannister were charged with murder, with ten other men detained as witnesses. Another man Lee Riceaux was stabbed during an argument in a saloon linked to a prior case involving Rickefor and Bianchini.
Veterans from multiple American Legion posts gathered at the Paramount theater to mark the 17th armistice anniversary. A rainout canceled the parade but Rev. H. L. Johns spoke on outlawing war as the theater program honored veterans with floral decorations and city officials led by Mayor Arnold Bernstein in attendance.
In Shanghai on November 11 a Chinese mob damaged a Japanese owned store window with bricks and bottles after 500 Japanese marines disembarked. The incident followed the arrival of over 2,000 Japanese sailors and amid the unresolved slaying of Marine Hideo Nakayama. Police reported the attackers fled.
Maultrie P. Freeman cadet pilot at Barksdale field and Victor J. Matula private escaped injury when their plane hit a cable across Red river and plunged into the river. They swam to shore after the accident yesterday in Shreveport Louisiana.
President Roosevelt announced a definite agreement with Canadian Prime Minister W L MacKenzie King to eliminate disagreements and unreasonable trade restrictions. He spoke at Armistice Day ceremonies and pledged America will seek peace while protecting itself, noting trade barriers as causing friction and citing neighborly discussions with Canada. A small fleet of rescue vessels braved San Bernardino straits to aid passengers and crew of the British freighter Silver Hazel marooned on a rock after the ship broke in two near Luzon. About 30 were reported on the rock as tides and currents hindered attempts, with boats repeatedly turned back by winds and heavy seas.
Pilot Dean Faulkner of Memphis perished with three farmers in a barn storming cabin plane crash near Pontotoc Mississippi. Victims were Bud Warren Lamon Graham and Henry Graham. One wing fell into a cemetery as investigation began. Faulkner an engineering graduate and three year commercial pilot was in town offering short flights.
Friends gathered in Monroe to celebrate John Farmer's 65th birthday as his southbound Missouri Pacific locomotive struck cows on a curve. Farmer, a North Little Rock veteran engineer, and his fireman William Trimble of Monroe died in the wreck. The party at 210 Ouachita Avenue had prepared a celebratory cake with 65 candles.
The Monroe area experienced a heavy downpour overnight into Monday with 2.85 inches of rain by 7 am, one of the heaviest in months. The Armistice Day parade was cancelled after 7 am due to the storm, and temperatures reached a high of 88 and a low of 62 for the 24 hour period ending Monday morning.
A 52 mile gale and heavy rain hit Shreveport and surrounding areas causing extensive damage to telephone and power lines. No casualties were reported.
Police heightened waterfront security after two dockworker deaths tied to a longshoremen strike. Three men who assaulted a non union black longshoreman last night, breaking his jaw, were sought. Hearings set Friday on murder charges. Harvey Parker, 30, and Joe Haney named in reports.
