Monroe observes Armistice Day with a lengthy parade through downtown, a morning ceremony at Paramount theater, and solemn addresses. The event draws thousands, halting city operations as schools banks and offices close. Children from parish schools join the procession despite light drizzle.
In Shreveport on November 11 firemen removed three dynamite boxes from a burning truck in a city garage preventing a major explosion. The owner, F F Reynolds of Geophysical Research Houston, was arrested on a dynamite ordinance violation with 100 dollar bond. Authorities believe a cigarette sparked the fire and 200 pounds of dynamite were in the boxes.
Rev Louis J Bristow of New Orleans announced his resignation as superintendent of the Southern Baptist Hospital at New Orleans during a West Monroe address to the Louisiana Baptist convention He said circumstances require retirement and he handed his resignation to the hospital board before leaving New Orleans Monday night He hopes for a providential choice of a successor who can combine business and leadership.
A 21 gun salute and sirens opened the Armistice Day celebration in New Orleans. A full minute of silence preceded taps on the steps of city hall, marking the somber observance.
A Christmas morning scene shows poverty and a sobbing child, highlighting the Goodfellow fund appeal. The News-Star and World sponsor the drive again this year to ease misery in the Twin Cities as demand rises during the holidays.
A Monroe grocery store on Grammont street was entered Monday night. A safe with about 85 dollars was stolen as robbers crawled through a broken window and forced the front door. They also took cigarettes and the cash register while the Lascara family slept. The safe was later found battered at a mill lot across the street. Police investigated as similar break ins and thefts were reported in town amid early winter crime.
A circuit court jury convicted O. E. Cain of Clarksdale Mississippi as accessory to the fact of assault with intent to kill in the attempted kidnapping of wealthy planter W N Gregory last September. A five year prison sentence was imposed. Another Clarksdale man Thomas Continued on Page Nine
Unidentified white man, likely hit by a car, was found lying in the rain off Jefferson Highway near Hope Villa, 15 miles south of Baton Rouge. A passing motor freight driver alerted Sheriff T. E. Mc Hugh after discovering a fractured skull and torn clothing. no papers or ID were found, only a pocket knife and a watch.
Jules J. Raley a 50 year old farmer living near Minden was killed when an automobile overturned at Fillmore in Bossier parish. Three others were injured including Miss Virginia Raley 18 and H J Heflin 52 of Minden who was president of the Webster parish police jury and W A Bagwell 25 a hitchhiker from La Junta Colorado. The wreck occurred as Raley attempted to pass another car causing a collision and the car to overturn.
In St Clairsville Ohio a grocery store that refused to close for Armistice Day was bombed with tear gas by men dressed as dough boys helmets and rifles. Patrons fled in tears as the squad carried out the attack. In Atlanta the Stribling De Kuh outdoor bout proceeded as scheduled despite rain and misfortune though Dempsey canceled a flight to referee due to weather.
President Hoover in Armistice Day remarks urged American support for the world court and freedom of the seas for food shipments. He forecast possible extension of Kellogg Briand to mobilize world opinion against violators and cautioned that nations remain prone to conflict.
In Washington and Arlington a quiet Armistice Day service honors the unknown soldier and pays tribute to fallen WWI memory. President Hoover places a wreath at the unknown’s tomb and urges lasting peace before the World Alliance’s goodwill congress.
Colonel Herbert Deakyne of the board of engineers said no decision on completing or modifying the Jadwin Flood Control plan will be made until after the inspection trip from St. Louis to New Orleans. He arrived with other engineers aboard the USS Mississippi to assess flood control options for War Secretary Hurley.
Edward P. Lowry a secretary at the American embassy in Mexico City fell three stories down stairs at the American club in Mexico City. He was the brother of Miss Elizabeth Lowry a nurse at St. Francis sanitarium in Monroe. Lowry survived prior Bolo knife wounds.

The eighty third annual Louisiana Baptist convention met at First Baptist church in West Monroe with about 500 in attendance. Ollie B. Webb of New Orleans was reelected president, with Rev Spur geon Wingo of Pineville nominating him for another term. E O Ware of Alexandria named first vice president and J P McCool of Crowley second vice president. Recording secretaries John Raymond of Shreveport and J P Durham of Alexandria were reelected.
Hood Gates a 13 year old son of A J Gates of 417 Wood Street was found at 11 30 a m Tuesday about half a mile from Eros by a Jackson parish deputy sheriff. He had disappeared from his home about 9 o clock Monday morning and was held at Eros until his family arrived to take him home.
