In Memphis a 10 year old, Joe Corbin, shot his father Homer Corbin after seeing him beat his 75 year old father in Steele Missouri. The bullet lodged in Homer’s neck as he was attacked. Joe acted to defend his mother and grandfather, who reported the incident.
The Federal Farm Board approved a commodity loan not exceeding 750000 dollars to the Southwest Irrigated Cotton Growers association of El Paso Texas to supplement loans from the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank at Houston. The loan will let the association advance up to 16 cents to its grower members. The board also revised several previous loans so they may pay 16 cents. The loans revised include 500000 to the Arkansas Cotton Growers Co operative association Little Rock 300000 to the Mississippi Cotton Co operative association Jackson and 250000 to the Tennessee Cotton Growers association Memphis.
C W Katchman of Mattoon dies from a bullet wound after police shoot him during a mass robbery at the Harris home in Champaign. Four robbers seized 60 guests and netted 540,000. Harold Smith of Tuscola is arrested. rest of gang remains at large.
Berlin report states Dr Julius Curtius, already acting foreign minister since Stresemann's death, is appointed foreign minister and heads Germany's foreign affairs. He succeeds the late Dr Gustav Stresemann.
A drizzle and murky skies did not deter crowds in Twin Cities and Ouachita parish from observing Armistice Day. The Saenger theatre hosted a 10 o’clock program with Leon Hammond at the organ, flags on display, and speeches by Colonel Ry Prenk White introduced by W. Cooper. Rab Hirsch gave the invocation, and Mrs. Barncastle sang as White praised civic and military dedication before concluding remarks. The parade was canceled due to rain. continuation promised on page nine.
The 1929 Red Cross roll call starts in Monroe at 9 a.m. under Dr. F. K. Hirsch. The city is districted and aims to finish within a week. West Monroe follows next week with Rev. F. L. McCoy overseeing, and outlying parish areas will be canvassed before Thanksgiving. A minimum goal of 2,500 enrollments is set, per local Red Cross workers. President William Butterworth has sent a letter to S. H. McClary regarding the ties between the Red Cross and the chamber.
Austin Texas November 1 Brady a former civil appeals court judge and prominent barrister faced murder charges for the stabbing death of Lehlia Highsmith 28 a supreme court stenographer He denied any awareness of the crime through his lawyer Sam Dickens who said Brady 59 was shocked when charges were filed and did not know what happened prior to the death His wife reportedly learned of the case from two charity workers Brady's attorney attended a Texas university football game and later drank with friends during the day
The steamship Escambia, aground five miles south of Carys Fort light Sunday, was floated at 3 a m today and is steering for Mobile according to Tropical radio station reports.
Moh Doyne and Milton M. Kinsey of Cick Smith & Company arrive in Monroe to survey city needs and inventory existing occupancy as a basis for a city plan and zoning program. Kinsey will stay. Doyne visits occasionally. both bring major city planning experience from St. Louis and New York.
Steel common and other leading issues hit new lows as selling intensified on the New York Stock Exchange. Stocks fell sharply with many shares dropping five to nearly twenty five dollars during the abbreviated trading session.
A Ponce de Leon train wreck near Oakdale Tennessee and another incident near Glenmary Tennessee killed four and injured over fifty passengers and crew. Survivors from Ohio and Michigan had weekend trips to Lookout mountains. Emergency crews rushed to hospitals in Chattanooga and surrounding towns for treatment.
The South Georgia conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South adopted a resolution by 156 to 26 to memorialize the general conference to replace life tenure for bishops with a four-year term. Rev Bascom Anthony of Thomasville led debate noting the church sometimes elects a misfit as bishop without naming individuals.
James C. Edgerton and Harry Ashe of Southern Skyways surveyed a Los Angeles to eastern coast air mail route through Monroe. William G.
