Long lines of service members escort the unknown soldier to Arlington as President Harding and Chief Justice Taft attend the funeral procession along Pennsylvania Avenue. Former President Wilson also joins the somber tribute amid muffled drums and a funeral dirge.
American Legion posts in Monroe Rayville Bastrop and other northeastern Louisiana cities stage Armistice Day events. A parade led by mounted police and J E Lockwood ends at the City School auditorium for a program featuring Rabbi H A Merfeld and a three minute silent tribute at 11 o clock. The day closes with prayers bells and taps as stores close and citizens observe the memorial.
In Washington today the capital led the nation in a solemn homage to the unknown French soldier. A long funeral procession formed at the capitol as minute guns sounded from Fort Meyer and across the river, and the nation observed two minutes of silence at noon. The casket lay in the capitol rotunda near Lincoln and Garfield, guarded through the day by a flotilla of soldiers, sailors, and Marines led by Pershing’s staff. Marshal Pershing rode to lead the march, with top generals and admirals from both world wars and Civil War veterans among the honor guard flanking the bier on its way to the grave.
North Louisiana hunters report scarce game and ducks due to a prolonged drought that dried ponds and pushed waterfowl toward southern waters. Fires burn extensively in Northeastern Louisiana, destroying dry cut over land as Gus Calhoun reports from Morehouse Parish to Monroe.
The Black Oil Syndicate, an all Negro group, plans to drill three wells on the Matt Fast lease near Huttig on the Missouri Pacific line. A derrick is up for one well and operations start within two weeks. The 1,000 acre block borders Frost Johnson Lumber and Union Sawmill interests, with Monroe field attention and hopes for a gusher. Other notes mention Cleveland Downey vs Happy Littleton on December 12 and John Buff retaining bantamweight title after a tough win over Jack Sharkey.
The new Rutledge home in ward seven near Center school house was burned last night about 8 o clock. Fire officials say incendiary origin is suspected as deputy sheriffs secured a suspect and tracked by dogs but no arrests were made as officers name several persons of interest.
In Baton Rouge on November 11 the Democratic executive committee voted 16 to 4 to hold a primary for the first supreme court district on November 29 to nominate a successor to Justice Frank A Monroe. The meeting featured Miss Gladys Breazeale voting by proxy for her father, a first for the state party. Eulogies honored Judge Luther E Hall, with praise from Frank J Looney and Senator George Perry Clinton as they reflected on his life and service.
Survey work in Claiborne parish under engineer H C Daigre aims to build an east west highway from Webster to Union parishes linking Homer Haynesville and Arcadia area oil fields. The contractor will be chosen in January for a 25 to 30 mile route costing about 200 thousand dollars.
Cleveland scene marks the retirement of Dr. Charles F. Thwing, one of America's oldest college presidents. He led Western Reserve University and Adelbert College for 31 years after a Congregational ministry career. In Los Angeles a submarine fire on L-6 at ten fathoms caused smoke and serious burns to seven aboard including the commander.
The president salutes a nameless hero as the nation grieves. He speaks of an undying glory and the shared sacrifice of American families, noting the fallen soldier could come from any home and that mothers across the country mourn with the country. The address continues on page three.
