Welby Lee testified he investigated 18 suspects in his 18 year, 100000 mile search for the hit and run killer of his father Newt Lee before Grover Jones was indicted for second degree murder in New Year’s Eve 1944 death.
A 10-year-old Start girl Patsy Ann Malone died at St Francis Hospital after a Saturday four vehicle wreck on U S Highway 80 east of Monroe. Other injured include Charlotte Allen and her two children Kenneth and Patty Allen. two more children Thomas Allen and two Black residents Ellen Lewis and Alberta Hamilton. Funeral plans remained under Mulhearn Funeral Home Rayville as investigations continued.
Federal and state mediators announced a tentative contract settlement with Local 10 of the Plate and Paper Handlers Union for Detroit's strikebound daily papers. Details remain undisclosed awaiting union ratification.

Dist Atty Sargent Pitcher filed aggravated assault charges today against seven Southern University men students including four football players. Two 18 year old coeds filed complaints after being taken to an apartment under false pretenses. The men reportedly were expelled and many left Baton Rouge as officers sought them. University authorities declined comment.

Heard of Hospital Service District No 1 says preliminary plans for Glenwood Hospital expansion are nearly finished and will be reviewed by the local board and then the State Board of Hospitals. Architect Berford Jacka of West Monroe leads the project to nearly double beds and expand x ray, surgery, and cafeteria facilities funded by an $870,000 bond and about $880,000 in federal Trill-Burton funds. Construction will start once plans are approved and contracts let.
Sen Jamar Adcock said Gov McKeithen will broaden a two cent sales tax to fund a $500 annual teacher pay raise through a 20 day special session starting Monday. The call includes liquor law repeal and sheriff commissions, with LTA seeking full pay schedule and possible strikes among teacher units.
