63 IN CONGRESS ARE FRESHMEN

Washington reports 63 members of the upcoming congress will be true freshmen. Though 84 were elected last Tuesday, 14 new house members and seven new senators have prior experience. Seven new senators served in the house, a path also taken by seven in reverse two years ago.

Merchants Urged to Allow Employees at Chest Rally

Monroe merchants were urged to let their workers attend a Community Chest Pep Rally at the Paramount Theater Monday at 8:30 AM. Co chairs Dave Silverstein and C G McAdams said all employees should participate, with seating provided for colored workers in the balcony. The brief 20 minute meeting covers the new unit account plan with payroll deduction options and will close at 8:50 AM. An honor roll listing firms whose employees attend will be released Monday afternoon.

Delayed Winter Spreads Across Louisiana And Mississippi

A mass of cold air from Canada brought unseasonably cold, cloudy weather to Louisiana and Mississippi. Temperatures ranged from the 30s to 40s with frost expected tonight in northern areas and subfreezing readings in northern Louisiana and extreme northern Mississippi. Tomorrow should bring fair, cool conditions with continued cold highs.

Republicans Gain Over Half Of Off-Year Vote Totals

Washington report notes Republicans polled slightly over 52 percent of the off year record total of more than 40.7 million votes cast Tuesday. AP tally uses the highest state total, usually governor or senator races, with Republicans 21,049,778 to Democrats 18,684,129. Minor parties add 598,118, pushing major party totals to 40,332,025.

Armistice Day Parade Slated in Twin Cities

Armistice Day observances mark the 32nd anniversary of World War I with a 10:30 a.m. parade in the Twin Cities. Veterans meet at the West Monroe VFW hall for a timely start. L. B. Woman's Body Found in Audubon Park Lagoon New Orleans

Police seek the identity of a middle aged woman found floating in a lagoon at Audubon park. Orleans parish assistant coroner Dr. Ignacio Medina Jr. says there are no marks of violence. He estimates the body in water six to seven hours. She is about 45, 5 feet 2 inches, 140 pounds, with reddish brown hair and blue eyes. She wore a gray dress over a pink slip, black shoes and a tan outercoat.

Hundreds Flee As Blaze Menaces San Bernardino

Fire erupts near San Bernardino forcing hundreds to evacuate as crews battle the blaze. Meanwhile in Baton Rouge voters reject the administration backed bond issue with about 92,507 for and 141,208 against the constitutional amendment based on 1,880 of 2,092 precincts counted. Governor Earl Long blamed low turnout and tax hikes for the defeat. state officials plan continued tabulation with final results due by November 27.

Fire sweeps San Bernardino as 14 injured in winds

In San Bernardino on November 10, a wind driven fire forced hundreds from their homes and damaged a two mile brush area near foothills. Firemen treated 14 injuries from debris and cinders while nearly 300 residents were evacuated to a school. one home burned after a wind shift.

Twin City Community Chest Holds First General Meeting

The first general report meeting for the $3,000 Twin City Community Chest drive was held at Hotel Virginia with leaders and volunteers present. W L Ethridge Sr chaired, aided by co chair Durrett, as pledge accounts were submitted and auditing by Harry Frazer headed the envelope review. Officials predicted an official tally by late afternoon and aimed to surpass last year through increased corporate gifts and employee payroll deduction plans, with a final meeting set for Friday November 17.

Young Texan killed by lion in cage at club

Eu gene G. Terry, 23, from a San Juan area farm, entered a lions den at a Reynosa nightclub to pet the cats. A young female lion leapt on him after he flashed a light. Washington, Nov. 10.—A review of recent history shows the Democrats’ slim Senate edge could evaporate due to attrition. Deaths and resignations have altered party totals amid a 49 to 47 close, with governors’ party loyalty affecting vacancies. The 81st Congress saw three deaths and three resignations, shifting three seats Republican. Five Rescued From Burning Elevator In Chicago Hotel

Five people including a baby and two elderly women were saved from a burning elevator at the Cornell apartment hotel on Cornell Avenue. Firemen forced the shaft door and grill to free those trapped as flames engulfed the lobby. All five sustained facial and arm burns. others were aided by ladders. William Bowen, 45, recounted waking to smoke and rushing his wife Wanda, three month old Judy, his mother, and aunt to safety before the doors jammed.

Widow, 99, Leaves 700 Descendants

New Orleans funeral services will be held tomorrow for Mrs Louise Carr Rome Boudreaux a 99 year old widow who has about 700 descendants. She was married twice and mother of 12 children six survive.
