Bids were opened for J. H. O Neal two story brick residence in Delhi. Curtis Lumber Company of Delhi submitted the low bid at 73500 with other bids ranging up to 99950. O Neal, a well known Delhi oil lands owner, arranged the Monroe plan by William King Stubbs.
The Ouachita parish police jury passed an ordinance prohibiting sales of alcohol to be consumed outside licensed buildings, aiming to curb minor access. The 58 nation UN political committee voted 48 to six to urge Albania Bulgaria and Yugoslavia to cease aiding guerrillas against the Greek government and to settle their differences with Greece. Russia and its bloc opposed the resolution with four nations absent or not voting.
German coal, iron, and steel sectors in the Bizonal area will be owned by German companies in a near future move. American General Lucius D. Clay and British General Sir Brian Robertson said military governments will retain some control over power. Mrs. Robert Ferguson of Cheniere receives word that 5 Sgt. Fred R. Baker of that community died in a bomber crash off the Azores, one of 19 killed. A graduate of O P H 8, he enlisted at Barksdale and served overseas to war’s end, later stationed in Tampa before being sent to England. He was en route home on furlough when the accident occurred. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Baker, live in Hodge. Body to be sent to Jonesboro for funeral and interment.
Two year old Anita Faye Knowles daughter of Deputy Sheriff Raymond Knowles will travel from Monroe on Wednesday evening to John Hopkins Hospital for a heart surgery with a 50 50 chance of recovery. Doctors described her condition as a heart deformity with valves affected and predicted she would not live past five without operation. The procedure is expected to last three and a half to five hours with a three day waiting period afterward for results.
Moscow papers give heavy play to a Washington Times Herald dispatch claiming President Truman may visit Moscow for a personal talk with Premier Stalin. The item sparked comment in Moscow and was published without comment by Soviet editors.
Waves of American dependents depart by air and sea from Nanking amid riots, hunger, and Communist pressure. Food strikes disrupt Hankow Shanghai and Nanking as police fire on crowds. evacuees head to Shanghai and Tsingtao aboard hospital ships and transports. The embassy says more sea evac routes will open, while workers demand wages in rice amid yuan instability.
Federal offices in Monroe will close Thursday for Armistice Day. Post office windows close and no regular mail deliveries in city or rural lines. Perishable packages and special delivery mails will be served. Mail distribution to post office boxes continues. Banks remain closed all day.
Three Franklin parish men M W Blake A W Townsend and E O Lloyd were jailed in Tensas parish after a ten mile pursuit by Sheriff Hiram Waller and deputies. They faced bonds on charges of theft of a cow and aggravated assault of a Negro. An unidentified man was shot at in Tensas parish and a cow was killed.
Washington reports National Chairman J Howard McGrath says Henry A Wallace has effectively left the Democratic party and will not be welcomed back. He notes Wallace has not announced plans regarding his Progressive party which polled under 1 million nationally. Senator Glen Taylor of Idaho says progressives may wait on Truman’s actions before deciding on disbanding or continuing their movement.
Miss Freeda Mickel Ouachita parish chapter chair of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis said the world s largest ambulance planned for Ar mistice Day display will not arrive as scheduled. It was needed in New Orleans and will reach Monroe later with a hoped arrival on Friday not yet confirmed.
