Monroe and West Monroe will observe the nineteenth anniversary of Armistice Day with a 10:30 to 11:30 a m business shutdown. A joint proclamation calls for a general suspension of business and industrial activities. Veterans and various organizations will coordinate the observance activities.
In Santa Rosa a 79 year old rancher Thomas Elliott used an old sword to defend his home during a deadly encounter with a hooded intruder. The attacker was killed by a single gunshot after Elliott lost a hand in the struggle. Sheriff Patteson outlined the officer's reconstruction of the events.
New York reports successful isolation of the measles virus by Professor Jean Broadhurst of Columbia University using a simple ink stain called nigrosin. The method detects infection days before rash appears, aiding identification of carriers and potential vaccine development amid 1924 measles totals of nearly 800,000 cases nationwide.
Chief of Police Frank V. Reitzell announced Monroe will enforce ordinance 2694 prohibiting sale of beer and wine and all spiritous liquors in drug stores and saloons from midnight Saturday to 6 am Monday. In Beirut on November 10 29 year old Armenian immigrant Meguer dich Karayan executed by hanging after confessing an insult motivated crime. He acknowledged firing on United States Consul General James Theodore Marriner in front of the U S consulate on October 12 and died after his reprieve was denied.

Baton Rouge reports a yellow cat with rabies exposed nine persons to hydrophobia over two days. Dr. T Jeff McHugh, city health officer, says nine are under treatment and more may have been bitten. Dr. A T Prescott confirms rabies reaction in the cat’s head.

Louisville report states Admiral Claude Charles Bloch, 39, is nominated by Secretary Swanson to succeed Admiral Arthur J. Repburm as U. S. Navy commander about February 1. Bloch, son of a Czech immigrant, veteran of Spanish American and World Wars, rose from Naval Academy graduate to leadership roles aboard the Iowa and transport Plattsburg.
Bernhard Sander a 28 year old German accused of espionage for the French foreign legion was hanged in Berlin. He was the fourth alleged spy executed within a week.
Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins says she will propose changes to the administration wage and hour bill as committees begin new sunset work. She discussed the bill with President Roosevelt and noted the bill’s stalled status in the House Rules Committee with Chairman Lehlbach of New York predicting action for a special session. She favors a board to set standards or, if Congress fixes them, enforcement would suffice.
