Monroe City Council approved building a 40 acre site in Selman Field industrial park to lease to ITT for a new plant. ITT will manufacture industrial safety relays and home control valves with many hourly employees. Bids due December 9. 20 year lease with 120 percent construction cost payment and 60 thousand renewal options.

Pacifist sets self afire near United Nations protest
Roger A. LaPorte, 22, a Catholic Worker volunteer, burned himself outside the United Nations in New York in a Vietnam war protest. He survived with critical third degree burns covering about 95 percent of his body and was hospitalized at Bellevue.
