An early morning fire at the People's Clothes in the 400 block of DeSiard Street damaged two other clothing stores and an upstairs recreation parlor. Four Monroe fire companies fought the blaze for two hours, originated in an alley trash can, with damage in the thousands. Firemen also battled two other blazes on Adams and Polk streets after the DeSiard fire. The call came in at 3 37 AM.
Biloxi Mississippi November 8 A new liquor sale ban joined a gambling shutdown in coastal cleanup. Sheriff Laz Quave in Harrison County ordered liquor sales halted following a probe into vice effects on airmen at Keesler Field. Stores cleared shelves after the order. the move followed the death of John Sitek a 17 year old Detroit airman after drinking at a local tavern.
United Nations truce negotiators in Panmunjom completely rejected the Communists newest proposal for a Korean buffer zone after a four hour session. Maj. Gen. Henry I. Hodes said the plan would create a de facto cease-fire and relieve the Reds from other armistice questions. A 16th subcommittee session was set for Friday at Panmunjom.
Milwaukee police reported four suspects including a red headed woman captured after a bank holdup netted $93,569. James Joseph Leather 36 from Chicago Harold Dennis Hall 19 Los Angeles Glenn Dale Maroe 21 Los Angeles Anne Snyder of Chicago were jailed under 50 000 bond each, arraignment set for next Wednesday.
New York Times reports President Truman offered to support General Dwight D. Eisenhower as a Democratic candidate next year after a Washington meeting. Eisenhower reportedly did not accept or fully reject. White House disputed the account, and Eisenhower did not comment.
Senator Robert Taft on a southern tour invited dissatisfied southern Democrats to join the GOP. He predicted some state Democratic groups would break with the Truman Democrats and said southern voters would see Republican positions more aligned with their interests. Taft urged presenting all Republican issues to southern voters and noted potential carry in some southern states. He then left for Kansas City.
Five new city buses were placed in operation this week. Commissioner Frank Cline of finance and utilities announced Thursday that the buses cost about 510,000 and were delivered by the Southern Bus Company. The vehicles will be spread across the city to replace buses four to twelve years old.
The Twin Cities Chamber of Commerce pushes for north south air passenger service with G L Morgan urging 800 local business and professionals to return questionnaires. The effort backs a Monroe route via Memphis Greenville Monroe Natchez and Baton Rouge and seeks strong community evidence of demand.
Ouachita Parish High School names eight finalists for homecoming queen with a reveal at 9:20 a m in the Ouachita gym. Finalists include two seniors Donna Montgomery Betty Halstead five juniors Shirley Tousman Hattie Johnson Sammie Camp Janis Dyar Anne Gates and sophomore Betty Jane Franklin. A pre game parade is set for 3 30 p m tomorrow from the Ouachita grounds.
Paris dispatch reports Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Vishinsky angrily condemning the western disarmament plan as leading the world to economic ruin and wartime hysteria. He accuses the United States of starting the Korean War and pressures Russia and others to resist U S armament strategy while Dean Acheson presents the plan for step by step disarmament and atom weapon limits.
President Truman called on the Kremlin to accept a foolproof three point Western disarmament proposal backed by the United States Britain and France. Secretary Acheson outlined the plan to the General Assembly as Vishinsky prepared to respond. The plan envisions a world armament inventory including possible disclosure of atomic weapon information.
Dozens of high school bands plan to attend the band day at Northeast State campus this Saturday. Invitations went to 40 band directors from north Louisiana schools. Tallulah High, Jena High, Sicily Island, Olla, Ouachita Parish, Greenwood and others are set to attend. Bands will tour buildings, then enjoy a wiener roast hosted by the college.
