Ouachita Parish totals 25 526 registered voters for Tuesday’s general election as of last week, the parish registrar Mrs Mae Lucky reports. The count is the largest since 1956 and reflects removals of over 600 nonvoters since April by last vote sheet signatures.
A dynamite blast on a Harlem subway car killed 15 year old Sandra Breland of Brooklyn and injured 18 others as the southbound six car Independent line train halted at 125th Street. Police said the blast may not be the work of the Sunday bomber blamed for past explosions.
Vice President Richard M. Nixon conducts a four hour nationwide television telethon from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. CST to answer voter questions via ABC. Detroit headquarters expect about 8000 calls though not all will be answered. Nixon aims to sway undecided voters as he campaigns across Wisconsin and Michigan before returning to California.
Senator John F. Kennedy opened the last day of his campaign in Providence Rhode Island charging Richard Nixon believes peace comes through parades and Soviet visits. He called productive power of the United States the real answer to the Communist challenge. Salinger said Republicans spend about 600000 on TV time including Nixon's four hour telecast and three half hour spots. Kennedy urged expanding peace and freedom and warned there are no easy shortcuts to balance of power. Rhode Island is considered safely Kennedy territory.

Final nationwide survey by Gallup shows Kennedy Johnson at 49 percent to Nixon Lodge 48 percent with 3 percent undecided. When limiting to those with a declared preference, Kennedy Johnson lead 51 to 49. Survey covers Nov 1 through Nov 4, not reflecting Eisenhower or late campaign effects.
AAP report says about 67 million Americans prepared to vote in Tuesday's presidential election between Democratic Sen. John F. Kennedy and Republican Vice President Richard M. Nixon. The pivotal seven states New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, California and Texas hold 205 of 269 electoral votes, with New York and California shown as Kennedy-leaning and others doubtful. Party members foresee a tight finish amid a whirlwind campaign trail totaling about 135,000 miles across air, rail, and motorcade, as both campaigns seek a final push.
Congo President Joseph Kasavubu speeds to New York to demand the immediate withdrawal of U.N. troops, with emphasis on forcing Ghanaian and Guinean soldiers out of the country. He plans to press at the United Nations as Congo’s Parliament remains in limbo after Mobutu’s coup and Lumumba’s ouster.
Floyd A. Holzapfel testified he and Bobby Lincoln kidnapped Circuit Judge C. E. Chillingworth and wife and killed them in the Atlantic for pay from Joseph A. Peel Jr. Peel allegedly planned further killings, including that of West Palm Beach State Atty. Phil O Connell. Lincoln has provided a full account of the 1955 slayings while serving a moonshine sentence in Tallahassee.
New Orleans AP reports Vice President Richard Nixon said he would sign a bill authorizing equal seaward boundaries for Gulf states. The Times-Picayune quoted Nixon confirming if Congress passes such equalization, he will sign. A Washington inquiry noted Supreme Court actions and said a House subcommittee would take up the bill early in January.
Washington AP reports that with Tuesday's election looming, Democrats are favored to keep control of the Senate and likely hold a solid edge in the House, though gains for Republicans are expected. Both parties estimate shifts, cautioning a landslide could alter the balance but not erase the current House margin. All 487 seats in the House are contested.
Dayton Ohio widow of James M Cox the 1920 Democratic nominee died at 70 after a cigarette started a fire in her second floor apartment. She was pronounced dead at Miami Valley Hospital. Cox served as Ohio governor in two terms and owned newspapers and stations in Ohio and Georgia. Oakwood police described the fatal blaze as starting from the cigarette she smoked in bed.
Louisiana Gov Jimmie H Davis seeks to block school integration with a bill to block integration. The House endorsed an eight member emergency committee to run Orleans public schools if the school board is removed. Senate Judiciary panel set a 1 pm hearing as House prepares to concur and adjourn.
Louisiana State University starts a four day training program for sheriff's office employees focusing on functions of civil personnel in sheriff's departments. The in service course covers tax collections serving legal documents and other civil matters with future sessions planned in Alexandria Monroe Shreveport and Lake Charles.
A two and a half year old child, Andrew White, was fatally injured at 10:30 a.m. when run over by a Monroe post office delivery truck in front of 1616 South Eleventh Street. Driver J R Walker is being investigated by Monroe police. Coroner Dr. John P. Burton ruled death from a crushed skull. Funeral arrangements are pending with Hixson Brothers Funeral Home in Monroe.
James Whitehead a 31 year old LSU government graduate student and Plains Presbyterian Church member began a water fast to Tuesday's presidential election. He aims to prompt ministers and priests to lead a free discussion on religion in the race.
Weather forecast notes slightly warmer conditions Tuesday with fair skies. Temperatures near 72 and no rain predicted. Monday highs in the 40s and Sunday at Selman Field reached 70/33 with no precipitation recorded.

A teachers' strike shuts down parts of New York City schools, with 15,000 plus teachers suspended as the walkout disrupts classes and triggers pupil demonstrations. Theobald said operations continued, though some schools were picketed or partly closed while 250 schools faced pickets.
Sam Henry Awl of 109 Malvern Street, a retired Monroe city building inspector for 25 years, died after a stroke. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Stone Avenue Methodist Church with Rev. Isaac A. Patton officiating, followed by burial in Riverview Cemetery. Survived by widow Effie Awl, son W. B. Awl of Monroe, daughter Mrs Roy Brice of Arcadia, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and sister Mrs Cora Gibbs.
