Moscow displays a bristling array of tactical weapons with atomic potential marking the Bolshevik anniversary parade. Western analysts are puzzled by giant mystery guns and jet-propelled artillery while mobility and strike power appear emphasized.
American military scientists are pursuing broad research for new or improved fuels to power missiles and satellites. A Russian broadcast claimed improved power in Sputnik II launch but gave no details. Solid fuels nearing liquid fuel performance were noted by William Holaday at a rocket engine plant dedication in Birmingham City Utah.
The Chicago Tribune reports President Eisenhower weighs plans to launch a space ship larger than Sputnik II using military rockets. The plan could fire within four months, circle Earth at about 600 miles, and carry animals for science. Pentagon officials estimate total cost under 275 million dollars.

The U S Public Health Service reports 1 25 million Americans infected with influenza last week raising total cases since last summer to 4 75 million. Last week 856 people in 108 major cities died of influenza and pneumonia marking an 11 percent rise from the prior week. The outbreak was reported from 40 states with some areas rising and others falling. A Kansas outbreak threatens to worsen with five deaths. national toll climbs.
Western delegates hailed a 579 vote in the United Nations General Assembly backing a 24 nation plan for new disarmament talks. They warned reconciliation with the Soviet Union was uncertain as Moscow reiterated its opposition and warned the plan could stall negotiations.
Rep Orto FE Passman will speak at the annual meeting of four northeast Louisiana Soil Conservation districts at Lake Bruin. About 260 leaders, including State Commissioner Sidney McCrory and Marion Monk, will discuss soil and water conservation, district goals, and related activities with a barbecue to follow.
Rain persists in the Twin Cities area with a multi day drizzle. Rain began Monday at Selman Field totaling .18 inches, reached 1.26 inches Tuesday, and .07 on Wednesday with a trace earlier. Scattered showers are expected tonight and tomorrow as temperatures rise from the mid 60s to around 70s.
Mayo Clinic neurologist Dr. Clark H. Millikan will address the Ouachita Parish Medical Society on strokes at 6 30 p m tonight at Bayou DeSiard Country Club with Dr. C T Yancey presiding. The Illinois native 42 year old physician is a Mayo Clinic consultant in neurology and a 1946 board certified specialist. After the talk a reception will be hosted by Dr. J R Simpson and Dr. C A Ulrich at the Simpson home.
An unidentified Birmingham man said in Hattiesburg he never realized the town was so large after two police officers offered to guide him. They spent an hour and several miles chasing the wrong street before HQ was consulted and the visitor was finally taken to his destination.
Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini announced their separation in Rome. The couple, who wed after Bergman left Hollywood for Stromboli, faced public reports linking Rossellini to Sonali Das Gupta. Bergman, 40, is ill with influenza. Rossellini, 51, left Rome as the couple ends their troubled union.
President Eisenhower convened a second National Security Council session with the largest outside expert turnout in these policy meetings. Mrs. Anne Wheaton said the gathering had no direct link to his science and security address scheduled from 8 to 8:30 p.m. EET, the first in a series aimed at reassuring the nation about scientific progress and security.
Dr Hubertus Strughold, head of the Department of Space Medicine at Randolph Air Force Base, said the United States is not behind in space medicine and could be ready for flight now. He cited the world’s only space cabin simulator and long term experiments testing men under anticipated satellite flight conditions.
Shreveport weather bureau warns of possible tornadoes in northeast Texas northwest Louisiana and southern Arkansas. Scattered severe storms raise the chance of one or two tornadoes within a 60 mile wide band from Texarkana to Little Rock. In Shreveport area the Caddo parish north of Oil City and Texas Cass Bowie counties and Arkansas Lafayette northern Columbia Nevada Hempstead Little River Sevier Howard and Pike counties are in the warning zone. Time of warning is noon to 7 p.m.
