Ouachita parish backed Smith by 2,863 to 1,445 for Hoover with 3 precincts unreported and two Democratic defections. North Dakota returns from 285 of 2197 precincts show Hoover leading 60 727 to 39 682 while early returns indicate Republican Governor candidate George F Shafer may win on partial tallies. Democratic hopes for a Smith surge appear dashed as western precincts report scattered early results.
Approximately $25 worth of coffee was destroyed at 2 30 p m yesterday when fire broke out in the roaster at the Monroe Coffee company located at 105 North Sixth street. The fire department quickly extinguished the blaze using 40 gallons of chemical. A deficiency in the cooling system was cited as the cause.
