Retired Sears leader dies at age 90 in Illinois
Gen. Robert E. Wood, retired Sears board chairman and founder of Allstate, died at his Lake Forest home. A West Point graduate and former Army officer, Wood built Sears from a mail order house to a global retailer with over 800 stores and more than seven billion dollars in annual sales. He led Sears as president from 1928 to 1939, chairman until 1954, and remained a director until 1968. He was born June 13, 1879 in Kansas City.
