Washington reports city elections shape early voter mood across states. Philadelphia Cleveland and San Francisco offer top contests with mayoral races and thousands of jobs hinging on local outcomes. Republicans and Democrats clash as voters weigh local issues against national sentiment.
The second annual Twin City Community Chest campaign raised $19000 with an additional thousand dollars donated Monday at Hotel Virginia. The drive extends three days to reach a $29500 goal supporting Monroe and West Monroe welfare and youth agencies including the Salvation Army Maternity Clinic Boy Scouts YMCA and Camp Fire Girls among others.
Amite Louisiana November 6. Sheriff Frank Edwards investigated the brutal ax slaying of Mrs Sadie Smith Hoyt 65 at her Roseland area home. Hoyt son Thomas 40 was subdued while loading bundles onto a halted freight train. Hoyt was jailed as officers continued the probe. Mrs Hoyt died after being found unconscious in a wrecked house.
A Sunday prison break at Southern Michigan penitentiary ends with Chief Guard Inspector Fred Boucher killed by a shotgun blast amid six felons who overpowered two guards and a prison official. Visitor Dorothy Roberts was lightly hurt by a pellet as the escape ended with the trio ceding a car and the others captured after a mile and a half chase.
Indianapolis sisters Mary and Dorothy Zimmer married on the same day. Mary wed John Maynard Cuask in Indianapolis while Dorothy became Dr. Nicholas Bersel’s wife in Paris, where both had been studying. In Green Bay, Peter E. Robillard marked 50 years at the northern paper mills and planned retirement after moving into his new home.
Gubernatorial candidate James A Noe prepares a ten parish stumping tour through north and south Louisiana. The schedule lists stops in Monroe Qui refrain parish Bastrop Oak Grove Lake Providence Tallulah Rayville Ferriday St Francisville Plaquemine Opelousas Hammond Franklinton and Bogalusa with event times from morning to evening across November 7 to 11.
Thousands from the Twin Cities and north Louisiana visit the Northeast Junior College campus during a public Sunday open house. Dean C C Calvert leads faculty tours of the new library building a fireproof two story cream brick structure with a 40 000 volume stack area and space for 15 years growth. The 165 foot reading room holds 200 at a time with indirect lighting concealed heating and native Louisiana gum woodwork, Venetian blinds, and aluminum shutters. A lounge fireplace and a 225 seat assembly room occupy the west and east second floor wings respectively while 18 private offices provide space for faculty. Continuous hospitality included hot coffee and sandwiches.
Oslo reports Norway rejected German protests allowing the U S freighter City of Flint to remain outside Norwegian waters awaiting its next voyage. The American crew may not come ashore while the Nazi prize crew is interned aboard the Olav Tryggvason in Bergen area.
In Shreveport Louisiana six Arcadia residents including Lorris M. Wimberly speaker of the house and District Judge J Rush Wimberly pleaded not guilty to charges of using the mails to defraud. The defendants appeared with attorneys and were released on bonds. Judge Dawkins gave 30 days to file motions. The US attorney said the trial likely would be moved to the February term in Shreveport depending on motions.

Local police and sheriff confirmed the victim of a Friday night taxicab crash in the 3400 block of DeSiard Street. Fingerprints matched an unidentified white man to Don Leslie alias Morrison, a resident of Wichita Falls Texas. The body is at Mulhearn Funeral Home. FBI fingerprints sent for verification. Driver T S Avant of City Cab Company was not charged.
Four Memphis residents and companions were injured in a highway crash near Percy Mississippi while returning from Baton Rouge after the LSU-Tennessee game. Dr John Buchannan suffered a fractured pelvis and severe bruises, Dr George E Paullus had head bruises, Wayne Settle Paullus fractured left arm and jaw, Roy Neudecker a bone fracture, and Jack Safford had lacerations not needing hospitalization. The group traveled toward Memphis when their car left a sharp curve south of Percy, about 35 miles southeast of Greenville. Young Paullus Neudecker and Safford are UT medical students.
Herbert Niccolls a 20 year old once jailed for murder faces a mental health review at Eastern State hospital. Gov. Martin seeks evaluation to decide if the former waif should remain imprisoned or be released.
The fall session of the North Louisiana State Singing convention drew about 6 000 people at Neville High School auditorium. Officers for the next year were re elected: Garland May president A C Banks vice president and A C Cockrell secretary treasurer. The next meeting will be at Grayson on the first weekend in June with musicians from Louisiana Tennessee Mississippi Arkansas and Texas in attendance.
In Monroe and West Monroe the two day carnival of politics draws crowds. Candidates court voters after church services while Simmie Woods faces C P Brogan and Gus Kokinos in the mayoral race. Rodney Mouton campaigns in French as a farmer ally seeking police chief.
Monday reports show Jimmy Buttitta running for city judge under Monroe Motor sponsorship. A telegram signed The Citizens Good Government Committee urged voters to consider his bid amid a tense local political climate.
In Baton Rouge Dr James Monroe Smith former LSU president pleads guilty to one of several indictments replacing state charges with four counts of forgery and one of embezzlement He faces delayed sentencing as his health is noted and federal prison terms already loom for mail fraud.
