La Tribuna dispatch from Rome reports an attempt on Emperor Haile Selassie in Addis Ababa. A bomb was found in the imperial palace and Ethiopian police sought an American negro identified as the would-be assassin. News came via Asmara and a caravan from the interior.
Rain and mud halted the northern Ethiopia offensive as Italian engineers rushed road building near Makale. From Asmara, two days halt orders were issued. scouts reported few heavy forces, while priests at Makale appeared to welcome the advance.
Chicago votes 44 to 3 to switch to eastern time effective March 1 next year, adding daylight saving time year round and aligning Chicago with New York and the Atlantic seaboard. The move ends 14 years of summer-only daylight saving, placing Chicago in the eastern time zone while many nearby cities may stay in central time for now.
Chicago November 5. Dr Alfred Adler, Viennese psychologist, warned modern youth that a girl who keeps beaux waiting in rain or is late for a date shows more interest in herself than in her escort. He cautioned against marrying to save him from problems, as motive remains adoration.
Washington reports that sharp tongued New Dealers fuel a surge of slang and phrase making as Hugh S. Johnson turns his colorful vocabulary toward critical takes on administration measures. Ickes mocks his former recovery role with mental saddle sores while Michelson calls him lovable volcano. General Johnson also contributes many zingers prompted by Senator Long of Louisiana.
Washington November 5. Two months after Huey P. Long was assassinated the share our wealth movement appeared befogged as Louisiana politics loomed. Earle J. Christenberry former Long secretary said the movement had been inherited by the Louisiana group and that state leaders must chart a course. He held membership records and data until the state organization chose a path.
Funeral services were held in Crystal Springs for W. B. McCluney 62 former president of the People's Bank here and longtime finance and insurance associate. He died at his home yesterday after earlier serving 12 years as cashier of Aberdeen National Bank. Survived by widow and three children William McCluney of Mayfield Kentucky Ross McCluney and Ann McCluney of Crystal Springs two sisters Mrs. W. B. Watkins and Mrs. Ada Robertson of Greenwood.
Warrants charging two men with a deadly mob incident were sworn out by a deputy. The hearing is scheduled for 5 o'clock. A Black victim is referenced in the mob fatality event.
A preliminary hearing was set in Ashland City for Luther Dotson Clyde Dotson Jimmie Dotson Jesse Dotson and Allie Brown charged with murder in the lynching of Baxter Bell near Kingston Springs. Bell was found shot after allegedly insulting a white woman at a Kingston Springs bus stop and was captured by five armed men who later surrendered.
A St. Clair county grand jury continued investigations into the ambush murder of union miner Virgil Thomas, with Attorney General Car Michael aiming to identify “higher ups” responsible and amid reports of witness threats. Judge Alto V. Lee urged reporting of tampering as he seeks to uncover juror fixers. four of nine witnesses were subpoenaed.
Fifty five Oyster Openers union members in New Orleans walked out today seeking 20 cents per sack opened, up from 15. Shippers refused to meet after a prior claim of as high as 35 cents before 1931. A four member union committee urged six shipping companies to discuss, but the strike proceeded.
Hyde Park dispatch notes President Roosevelt faces a 1936 election defined by his own record. He votes in today’s state assembly contest and signals a shift from 1932, with Democrats pursuing retention of power and a new political dynamic shaping the campaign.
Baton Rouge November 5 Louis L Morgan attorney for the Louisiana highway commission withdrew from the race for governor in the January primary. Governor O K Allen announced his own candidacy for the United States senate triggering surprise and alarm among administration supporters who had backed Allen J for governor.
Parents of 15 year old Alva Carmen Thurring reported their daughter missing since October 29 and believe she has been abducted. Police plan to circulate her description nationwide as she left home for school.
Local independent Democratic leaders finalize plans for the first Home Rule rally in the fifth district during the current political campaign. The meeting is set for Thursday at 7 30 p m in Neville high school auditorium with the full Home Rule ticket expected to attend and discuss issues.
Bids were opened today by registrar Lucille May Grace for state mineral leases. In Avoyelles and Rapides parishes the bottom of Bayou Boeuf was leased to W. T. Burton of Sulphur, Louisiana for a $250 cash bonus, a one year lease, and a customary one eighth royalty. In Evangeline and Acadia parishes the bottoms of Bayous DeCaine and Mellet also awarded to W. T. Burton with a $750 bonus.
Captain Fred Inman, pilot of a Federal Barge lines towboat at Baton Rouge, was identified by a friend as the amnesia patient found in a Dallas rooming house. He had disappeared October 5 and recalled nothing before October 6, keeping a crude diary since then.
President gets No 399 and mother 400 in Hyde Park as voters in six states watch outcomes for national trend. Kentucky elects governor and state legislators. New York votes on assembly and bond. New Jersey, Mississippi, Virginia hold varied state contests. Municipal races noted in Philadelphia and other cities.
President Roosevelt cast his vote today near 1 PM EST with family members present. A crowd gathered outside the town hall voting place as he arrived, and he was accompanied inside by Mrs. Roosevelt, his mother, and other relatives.
Florida suffered four deaths and many injuries as the second hurricane battered Miami Fort Lauderdale Hollywood and Dania wrecking homes and property. New York November 5 union dock workers on Atlantic and Pacific coasts enacted a boycott against gulf shipping and maritime interests that decline to recognize the International Longshoremen's Association. IL A president Joseph P. Ryan announced orders for immediate boycotts at north Atlantic ports of all ships from Alabama Louisiana and Texas where owners have refused to do business with the union. Pacific coast longshoremen continued to refuse.
Markets and banks closed across New York state on election day while most other U S markets remained open including Chicago and New Orleans.
Out of season duck hunters in Louisiana face new scrutiny as coast guard planes join agents to spot violators. Five men were charged for pre season shooting with bonds set at one thousand dollars each.

The storm, dubbed a Yankee hurricane by the Miami Herald, caused widespread property damage and prompted rapid relief efforts. Residents sheltered as winds roared and rain blanketed the area before utilities and safety measures were restored.
Three men injured when two cars collided on the Dixie Overland highway opposite Splane addition at about 10 45 Tuesday. D F Ball suffered a severe laceration and concussion and was taken to Vaughan Wright Bender clinic. Joe D Bailey of West Monroe sustained multiple rib fractures and other injuries and is at Riverside sanitarium. P L Edwards a Ball chauffeur received bruises and was treated at the clinic. Bailey allegedly eastbound and Edwards westbound. Bailey reportedly lost control while Edwards swerved to avoid impact. both vehicles badly damaged.
The Orphir salvage ship located a wreck off the head of Ainsale on the Irish coast and confirmed it as the Lusitania torpedoed by a German submarine in World War I. The salvage crew has worked since early summer to locate the famed liner.
