Captain Hawthorne C. Gray is believed to have achieved an altitude record for free balloons but perished in the attempt. His body was found by a farmer in a tree near Sparta Tennessee. Identification was made from papers in his pockets and the balloon bore the serial S 80241. Gray had ascended from Scott Field Illinois and was last seen over Mount Vernon Illinois with a 50 mile per hour wind at 6000 feet.
