Louisiana voters back Roosevelt and Governor Leche in a November referendum. Constitutional amendment No. 10 clears the way for a state social security program financed by a two per cent luxury sales tax and supported by state parish and national funds for the aged blind children and unemployed.
The Associated Press reports a sweeping victory for Roosevelt with Democrats dominating Senate and House races. Only Maine and Vermont clung to Republicans as NH flipped to Roosevelt. Electoral votes surged toward Roosevelt near 523 to 8 for London, signaling a dramatic shift since 1820.
Democrats captured at least 12 of 33 governorships and led in 14 more as results neared. Republicans won Vermont and New Hampshire and led in Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota, with Roosevelt's coast-to-coast win boosting Democratic chances in many states. In Michigan, Frank D. Fitzgerald trailed early leader Frank Murphy.
