Xavier Cugat testified before House investigators that he won $16,000 on The $64,000 Challenge as a coached contestant and admitted he lied to the New York district attorney about his role. He described the arrangement as fraudulent and gave details of the advance aid received.
Supreme Court opened a hearing on the unions appeal from a back to work order for about 500000 striking steelworkers. Arthur J. Goldberg argued the nation faces no national emergency to justify an 80 day injunction under Taft Hartley and cited steel output figures and defense needs. The argument also touched on quiz show contestant Cugat and his tax status.
Delegates from Asia and Africa urged the U.N. to oppose France’s plan to test an atomic bomb in the Sahara. Mo rocco’s Ahmed Taibi Benhima opened the 82 nation Political Committee debate arguing the Sahara is not unclaimed and should not be contaminated. Jules Moch defended France saying the test poses no serious radioactivity risk and that France may halt testing only if a global ban is agreed.

In Gulfport Mississippi a 31 year old woman identified as Mrs Harry Blue is to face murder charges for the slaying of her two children Joel six and Harry Norman ten The suspect was moved from Harrison County jail to Memorial Hospital for observation Investigators say the killings occurred after her husband an Air Force sergeant was assigned overseas The victims included Gwendolyn Earl who stood in the doorway and was not saved The suspect reportedly told a couple I just shot my two kids The gun was a .22 revolver taken by a bystander and the motive appears linked to the overseas assignment contends deputies

Voters crowded the Ouachita Parish courthouse as registrations rose to 24 509 up 1 139 in recent weeks. Books close at 5 p m tomorrow with about 40 turned away yesterday. Sheriff deputies sped the process by issuing numbers to those waiting to register.
Winners in three divisions announced at a West Monroe luncheon. W A and T A Calloway topped irrigated entries with 125.36 bushels per acre, M L Johnson led unirrigated with 112.65, each group winning 250 dollars. M B Brown Jr led Negro farmers with 101.90 bushels per acre, 100 dollars. Eugene Moore received special mention.

Freeman also expressed understanding of Van Doren’s anger and did not comment further.

Winners report changing jobs and little lasting financial gain beyond prize money, with most denying direct help on answers. Mrs. Carlyle E. Anderson says she received no answers but suspects questions were tailored to avoid certain topics.
Baton Rouge April AP reports Louisiana business activity rose 7.3 percent in September from a year earlier, with September up 0.9 percent from August. Five of six index items advanced, led by petroleum manufacturing sales up 21.4 percent and crude petroleum up 13.1 percent. Employment fell 1 percent while other sectors posted gains and March-like monthly gains.
