Louisiana voters backed school segregation in a tightly contested off year election. 31 constitutional amendments were on the ballot and Rep F Edward Hebert won reelection to the First District in a landslide as Democrats swept Congress.
Two special officers, a man and a woman, begin duty in downtown Monroe to curb holiday shoplifting. W G Miles aged 25 and Mrs Charles Bonnie Bailey aged 31 will wear regular police uniforms and patrol stores through year end. They were hired by the city council at downtown merchants’ urging after annual losses to theft during Christmas seasons.
Cold snap hits Twin City area with temperatures dropping to 28 degrees at Selman Field and only 48 degrees by noon. Rain is forecast to begin after 5 p.m. with continuous showers after 10 p.m. Officials say Thursday may bring warmer weather.
A 49 year old Bessemer man Charles W. Smith was killed when his butane truck struck a concrete bridge four miles east of Rayville on U S Highway 80. The truck was thrown under the embankment and Smith died instantly. The body was taken to Mulhearn's Funeral Home with no arrangements yet made to return to Bessemer.
Baton Rouge Governor Robert Kennon says a Supreme Court test may be required to rescue a 50 million dollar highway bond issue if constitutional amendment Alo. 22 fails. He brushed aside talk of elections and stressed legal action as the path forward.
Unofficial returns from Ouachita parish show strong support for continuing school segregation with 6042 for and 1352 against. Voters also favored Proposal 18 on district judges and Proposal 12 the Korean veterans bonus bill with 4679 for and 1821 against.
President Eisenhower said he sees no repudiation or disapproval of his administration in Republicans losing the House to Democrats. He plans to consult with Democratic and Republican leaders on domestic and international matters as the new Congress convenes in January.
Fifteen persons who drew Democratic nominations in Ouachita parish primaries were formally elected in the general election. Elected officials will be eligible to take oaths once they receive governor commissions, with 30 days to qualify. Most are expected to take office between December 1 and December 15.
A four vehicle crash at Cypress and Slack streets in West Monroe injured Trooper H. R. Phillips and C. L. Martin. Phillips, 24, suffered a fractured hip and abrasions but was listed in good condition. Martin, 36, was believed seriously hurt. Both were taken to St. Francis hospital by Kilpatrick Funeral Home ambulance. The collision occurred about 6:30 a.m. as Phillips responded to a call. Martin pulled into the police car’s path, sending vehicles into oncoming traffic.
New York Governor-elect Averell Harriman holds a slim lead over Irving M. Ives with 29 districts uncounted. With five million votes cast, Harriman's margin is about 10,000 to 15,000, as upstate GOP districts favor him. Javits defeats Roosevelt for attorney general. Dewey orders machine guards during recanvass.
City Detective Chief Hugh Tolbert says four poisonings occurred in the 600 block of Matthews over several days. Three dogs died and one was seriously ill. a food specimen is being tested for poison while owners keep dogs chained to prevent further harm.
Democrats clinch 18 of 34 governorships while Republicans take 13. Averell Harriman defeats Irving Ives in New York by about 11 000 votes in a five million vote total. Massachusetts Nevada Wyoming races swing to GOP or Dem as outcomes remain unsettled in places like Minnesota.
Senate remains undecided as Democrats gain House seats and win four GOP seats. Republicans gain holdovers and key states like New Jersey Montana and Oregon shift with Clark Case Howell Murray D Ewart Neu berger Corden Neu berger among pivotal races. Eisenhower and Nixon campaigns cited by observers as factors in outcome.
Reports from Franklin Lincoln Catahoula Caldwell Madison Union and Tensas show various amendments approved or defeated with precinct counts and incomplete tabulations. East Carroll completes unofficial returns listing amendments passing numbers 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 and others.
Early returns from 839 precincts favored a constitutional amendment to allow Georgia to maintain segregated schools as private institutions with 135 767 to 135 166 votes. Rural boxes were expected to widen the margin further as remaining counts come in, despite big city boxes signaling opposition.
The Ouachita Parish School Board voted unanimously to raise salaries for Superintendent W. W. Ward to 10 000 and for Assistant Superintendent Milton C. Hall to 7 600 and Supervisor Mrs. Gregory to 7 000. Visiting teacher Mrs. Gladys Griggs also increased to 5 650. The board approved leasing 141.3 acres of Sixteenth Section land to Fred Stovall for pasture at 1 per acre per year for 10 years.
In Chicago election results show Democratic Senator Paul H. Douglas leading over Republican Joseph T. Meek with less than two thousand precincts remaining. Douglas holds a margin exceeding 250000 votes as the state vote count continues and concessions have not been formally made.
