In a New York column dated November 8, writers attack Bubblehead Wallace and Roose velt era figures over alleged letters to Nicholas Roerich. The piece accuses Wall ace and associates of corrupt influence, purporting large art import sales and charitable misdeeds tied to the River side drive group.
Democrats secure a Senate majority after a 48 48 tie, and gain a House majority with 218 seats as late returns project a larger new Congress. Indications show Democrats ahead in several Senate races, with Republicans facing defeats across both chambers.
Arkansas voters favored the Democratic slate led by President Truman and Governor candidate Sid McMath. McClellan and McMath won in unofficial returns, with several Democratic incumbents and new congressman Tackett also elected. Close races included Third district candidate Trimble.
After election day polls misjudged Truman's strength as predicted by President Truman. Gallup director Dr George Gallup called the result a rare close election and said the analysis of voting statistics will explain why the polls underestimated Truman. Final tabulations had Dewey at 43.5 percent.
Gov Thomas E Dewey conceded the 1948 presidential race to Franklin D Roosevelt. The telegram to Truman expressed hearty congratulations and urged national unity to keep the nation strong and free and establish world peace. Dewey spoke with Earl Warren before issuing the concession as Hagerty noted Ohio favored Truman.
An informed source from the American United Nations delegation says Secretary of State George C. Marshall will resign January 20, regardless of the presidential election outcome. The source notes repeated reports of a possible resignation and says Marshall plans to retire to his farm.
States' Rights Democrats appeared certain to pocket Mississippi nine electoral votes as incomplete returns showed Thurmond leading Truman nine to one in the state. Voters backed a slate allied with Wright while opposing a constitutional amendment to block Negroes from voting and an annual legislative session.
New Orleans November 3. Nine proposed constitutional amendments appear on the ballot with campaigns for and against, tied to the Long faction and opposition factions. Local officials report active public interest and debate over amendments affecting state governance.
Pearl River county grand jury returned a true bill against Leonard Seals a 65 year old farmer for murder in the shotgun death of Pearl River county game warden Frank W Stuart 31 whose body was found in a swamp near Poplarville on Sept 22 Bloodhounds traced a trail to Seals home and District Attorney Robert Livingston said the state aims to try him in the current circuit court session.
President Truman promised to dedicate himself to world peace and domestic prosperity after an upset victory over Gov. Thomas E. Dewey. He commended Dewey for sportsmanship and pledged to serve the American people to the best of his ability. He thanked Dewey in a brief post election message and noted the vitality of free institutions.
Paris November 3 John Foster Dulles said that regardless of the election result the United States will continue in a bipartisan manner. He spoke as returns showed a close race between Dewey and Truman and before his departure for the American delegation meeting at 3 am New York time 8 am G M T. He asserted unity and vigor in foreign policy despite a possible switch from a Democratic to a Republican administration.
Unofficial late tabulations from 21 of 55 Ouachita parish precincts show Thurmond over Truman by more than 250 votes. Thurmond 1 663, Truman 1 408, Dewey 553, Wallace 4. Russell Long leads for Louisiana senate with 2 544 to 991. Heavy voting reported through the parish.
Early returns show Truman ahead in popular vote and electoral count with California and many key states decided. Dewey conceded defeat as Thurmond carried four states and Truman heads to Washington with a Democratic Senate and House ready to support his program.
National picture shows Truman leading in 28 states for 304 electoral votes while Dewey has 16 states and 189 votes. Thurmond holds 28 votes in three Deep South states and leads in Louisiana. Senate Democrats 19 elected, Republicans 7 holdovers, House Democrats 237, Republicans 141, American Labor 1. Governors Democrats 19 to Republicans 10.

Rep J Parnell Thomas winner in New Jersey Seventh District reelection bid defeating John J Carlin. He will face a federal grand jury over alleged kickbacks from his Washington staff. Senator J Howard McGrath called election results a victory for the American people and American labor. Governor James E Folsom said he will proceed with the court action.
