A Cumberland county jury found Western Union Telegraph Co. and its Bridgeton office manager Charles H Frake guilty of maintaining a dis orderly house where bets were placed. The company faces a possible $1000 fine and Frake up to $1000 or three years prison. Sentencing set for Nov 15. The firm said it will appeal alleging trial errors.

Ouachita Parish District Attorney Fred Fudickar Jr. said he will investigate a claim by Rayville Fuller that money was offered to influence votes for a parish superintendent vacancy. Fuller’s accusation arose during a special school board meeting after W. W. Ward was elected superintendent amid calls for an inquiry.
Wichita Kansas reports a thief who stole a new Cadillac from an auto agency last year telephoned to say he had returned the car. The vehicle was found in front of the agency owner’s building, recently cleaned and repainted with 20 000 miles on the speedometer. Detective James Reeves stated the car was in good condition and lacking only antifreeze.
A two-ply winter stormpack hit wide areas from the Rockies to New England and into Texas with heavy snow and freezing rain. Strong winds and subzero temperatures disrupted travel as blizzard warnings issued for northeastern New Mexico. Northern Texas recorded below freezing conditions.
After two wet days in the Ouachita National Forest, Arkansas hunters abandon the search for two missing circus animals a tame black bear and a crippled Polar bear. Sheriff Wilbur Tidwell of Montgomery County halted the organized effort and said he would await a reply on further action.

The Defense Department seeks 59,650 draftees in January, the largest monthly call since last spring. Of the total, 48,000 go to the army and 11,650 to the Marines, to offset lower December inductions when holidays paused service. Decembers call is 16,900. recent months have averaged about 40,000.
