Insurgent war planes drop a hail of bombs over Vallecas, about two and a half miles from Madrid, as civil war closes in from three sides. Three children die and eight adults are wounded. Government forces evacuate Getafe and rush fresh troops to defend Madrid suburbs.
Toronto dispatch reports a spelling error in the Millar baby race results. Mrs. Lily Kenny reveals her two missing babies are properly registered as offspring of Mrs. Kenny, making her the sole winner if the C versus RK distinction determines the prize.
News agency predicts Franklin D. Roosevelt and John N. Garner will win in a landslide with a 3 to 7 million vote margin. They expect 38 states and about 410 electoral votes, while Landon carries only Maine and Vermont for eight votes. Eight states are viewed as doubtful with 113 electoral votes at stake.
Walter E Edge Jr 21 and Howard Hornback 32 were in a Halloween weekend crash on Mount Vernon highway. Edge pulled from Hunting Creek alive after his car plunged in. Hornback drowned hours later at Georgetown University foreign service student Hornback from Hannibal Missouri.
Mrs Elizabeth Hare pleads with Michigan governor to spare Howard Fulger who fled from prison in 1919 with a dozen convicts. Fulger, using the alias Howard H Law, was employed as an engineer near Chicago and later married his 69 year old wife. Authorities in Jackson Michigan know him as prisoner No 11-109.
Ella Pritchard, 76, died at Dr T A Mitchells home on De Siard road Sunday night after a lingering illness. Funeral at Mulhearn funeral home Tuesday at 10 a m with Rev L T Hastings officiating. Interment in old city cemetery. Pallbearers named. Native of Monroe, lifelong resident, niece of the late Mrs J L Nelson.
Detroit reporter Parsons of the Louisville and Nashville railroad died in a local hospital after weeks of illness. Born in Lincoln County, Kentucky, he was 67 and formerly served as freight claims agent in Louisville. Funeral services will be held in Louisville on Wednesday.
The fifth district American Legion and auxiliary conference drew representation from 23 posts at Hotel Virginia on Sunday. Monroe's Sam Orchard chaired with Bernice’s Mark Price as vice commander and Monroe’s Harry Stein as district adjutant. State officers and committee chairs attended in strength, with strong auxiliary presence and Louisiana Department Commander Ernest L. Hawkins of Shreveport leading the delegation alongside Roland Cocreham.
Joseph D. Stecher conference chairman announced Oliver P. Stockwell of Lake Charles La as Louisiana chairman of the junior bar conference of the American Bar Association.

A pileup on the Red River bridge in Shreveport caused one death and injuries to three others. Billy Lemmond, 21, was killed after being thrown from his car and run over.
