A field region test near Monroe in Richland parish reports a gas blow in the Gulf Refining Company area. Officials estimate capacity between six and ten million cubic feet, triggering conservation agency interest and potential oil strata discoveries.
The gas well lies 12 to 15 miles from Monroe in a straight line but is hard to reach. The route goes from Monroe to Shcard then left to the Triangle Filling station, right to Start, and from Start due south five miles, totaling about twenty five miles by this path.
Excitement spread in Richland parish as the first wildcat gas well near Monroe blew in during recent days. Initial tests showed six to ten million cubic feet of gas with strong pressure. Oil men say the discovery could advance Monroe area prospects by about fifteen miles toward Swartz and boost statewide acreage reduction efforts. CONTINUED ON PAGE TEN.
Patrolman C R McVeety a Centenary College student is hospitalized with a severe flesh wound in the right hip after a gun battle with two robbery suspects. McVeety and Patrolman Standiford chased the men who had robbed a local drug store of about 150 dollars. One suspect fired as McVeety leaped from the police car and he returned fire, believing he wounded a man during the escape.
Monroe and West Monroe election commissioners in Ouachita parish are asked to phone the polling booth returns to The News-Star as votes are counted tonight. The paper seeks to tabulate constitutional amendment results and appreciates the commissioners’ assistance. Telephone 223 for calls.

The Oil Operators Trust completes No. 7 Urania SE 1-4 of SE 1-47-10-2E as initial flow of 600 barrels with 2 percent water. Seven wells on 40 acres are producers. air compressors are used on two wells to boost flow, keeping daily production around 1000 barrels. Drilling plans and core tests proceed on nearby offsets and Hatfield extension amid ongoing field development.
A neglected hurricane left the Isle of Pines facing a food shortage for about two thousand people. Sanitary conditions are reported as good but relief is urgent.
