Renewed reports that Governor Goodwin Knight would run for the U S Senate instead of seeking re election next year stirred fresh turmoil in California politics as San Francisco and Los Angeles buzzed with the talk.
Senator William F. Knowland of California said there is no deal in the rumor that Governor Goodwin Knight will withdraw from the June Republican primary for governor. The remarks address persistent reports about the race and Knight's possible exit.
Washington sources and allies say Governor Knight, 60, is considering stepping aside from the Republican governor bid and clearing the way for Senator Knowland, while Atty. Gen. Edmund Brown faces no opposition on the Democratic ticket. Knight has not confirmed or denied the reports and left for a three week rest after saying he would seek re election. Brown calls the reports a cynical deal.
The flu outbreak led to more Texas schools closing with concerns federal funds could be affected by lower attendance. State Board member W C Graves assured districts no loss of funds due to the disaster, while several schools including Central Heights High near Nacogdoches and others in Springtown Brownwood Brookesmith Skidmore and Florence Hill remained shut.
In Little Rock, 74 year old Rev. J C Cranshaw turned himself in to police after an arrest warrant was issued for NAACP leaders over failure to disclose records. He posted a 300 dollar bond and returned home as lawyers planned defense. The city requires tax exempt groups to reveal officers memberships and funding and NAACP plans federal court action to challenge the ordinance.
The Defense Department announced the test firing of the Snark intercontinental guided missile at Cape Canaveral Florida. Details were not released. The report followed a separate incident in which a Jupiter A missile at the same base was destroyed due to a malfunction. Admiral Burke commented that intercontinental missiles do not render other weapons obsolete. The Women's Auxiliary of St Patrick's Church in West Monroe hosts a bazaar Saturday from 2 p m to 10 p m at the church intersection of South Fifth and Coleman. Scout Troop 128 holds a rummage sale tomorrow 5 a m to noon to raise funds for Cuban Boy Scout Gervacio Castanet, an associate member. The sale location spans DeSiard and Sixth streets in Monroe and the corner of South Riverfront and Wood streets in West Monroe. Donations are welcome.
At Pacific command HQ Adm Arleigh Burke and Adm Felix Stump declare readiness to punish aggressors swiftly while cautioning that subversion and communist coups in Southeast Asia could arise before action is possible. They spoke with visiting newsmen at Pearl Harbor.
Willard C. Bates a 56 year old tavern owner and ex convict was slain in a hail of machine gun and shotgun fire as he drove to his Lyons Illinois home. Police believe the killers used a machine gun and repeating shotguns firing through the car and into the house. Bates body lay in the driveway while his wife Joan 38 described a deafening volley and a home raked by bullets.
Warden Mau rice Sigler said Calvin L. King a 22 year old inmate from Delhi serving 10 years for armed robbery died early today after a skull fracture from an assault in the first offenders dormitory at Angola LA. Investigators suspect a fellow inmate used a short pipe as the weapon. Authorities are questioning dormitory residents.
President Eisenhower announced a November 13 Oklahoma City speech under the New Frontiers Exposition to rally public confidence in U S science and economic strength. He will address Science and Security at the governor Raymond Gary invited event, flying in mid afternoon and returning that night or the next morning.
Area residents can expect a warm weekend with scattered showers. Tonight's temperatures near 64 to 68 rising to 80 to 84 tomorrow and a yesterday high of 81 with a 57 low. No rain fell statewide yesterday.
A Georgia based group American Resettlement Foundation Inc says reports Nixon is targeted are baseless. State Welfare Director Alan Kemper and founder A A Fowler Jr deny involvement in any house move while confirming option on a $75 000 house in a major US city for a planned Negro family by Christmas. Fowler says negoti ations are in several cities with volunteers offering property and aims to place a qualified family in a Northern city before Christmas.
A four seat cabin plane carrying four executives of the Akers Construction Co. of Salina crashed west of Columbia Elk County Kansas killing E Chad Akers 35 head of the firm and Edward Dumas. The two injured were Ralph Weigel and Calvin Bowden of Salina taken to St Mary's Hospital in Winfield.
Local police in Monroe investigate two more burglaries during the night and early morning, targeting Unique Cleaners and a Phillips 66 service station. A safe was stolen from the station and clothing was dumped from racks at the cleaners as officers note eleven thefts in four days. A separate theft involved a juvenile snatching a fundraising bag from Mrs. Royce Leachman. Vandalism also being investigated at a residence on Louise-Anne.
The Metropolitan New Orleans Crime Commission seeks a public hearing to probe possible malfeasance by Sheriff William Cool and other law enforcement officials. They asked Dist. Atty. Frank Langridge to convene the meeting and compel sworn testimony.
Victor Wayne Whitley reportedly admitted orally to taking part in the July 17 robbery of Tenore’s Party Mart at 801 Louisville Avenue, earning about 1500 in cash for two gunmen. He refused to sign a written statement. The case ties to a broader Indiana manhunt and a fatal police roadblock after Whitley’s partner Ralph Walker Taylor was killed.

Merlyn S. Pitzele, advisor to Eisenhower in 1952, testified to the Senate Rackets Committee that Dave Beck paid him $15,000 through Nathan Shefferman for advice on how to run the Teamsters. He said he quit in 1955 due to widespread corruption and noted Beck’s push to hire him in 1952. Pitzele has been a labor editor since 1941 and advised Dewey in 1944 and 1948.
