Theodore Roosevelt spoke in St Louis denouncing German-American groups pursuing German interests over the United States. He labeled them an anti-American alliance yet defended the majority of German-origin Americans as loyal, urging unity and warning that foreign-aligned factions threaten American citizenship and national cohesion. He cited personal examples of colleagues who faced accusations of foreign ties but remained true Americans.

Peoria May 31 three former governors addressed the Prohibition state convention. Eugene Poss of Massachusetts William Sulzer of New York and John P St John of Kansas spoke today to urge temperance and support for prohibition policies.
Special to News-Star reports in Baton Rouge that the Johnson near beer bill, after two hours of debate in the Senate, was ordered engrossed and sent to the third reading. The move marks a victory for prohibition advocates.
The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered new coal freight rates, lowering Alabama to Mississippi and Louisiana rates by five to twenty cents while Illinois and Kentucky mines to the same points see increases. Some Jackson Mississippi rates rise fifteen cents per ton. Distance rates shift ten to twenty cents higher. Low through routes are set from Hindis Kentucky Tennessee and Alabama to Natchez Greenville Vicksburg Gulfport and Baton Rouge New Orleans. About twelve hundred rate changes from Alabama and eleven hundred from Illinois Kentucky are shown, with most Alabama changes deductions and most Illinois Kentucky changes increases.
Dr J J Thomas of Okaloosa Parsonage swore out a warrant for his son William B Thomas on a charge of assault with a shotgun with intent to kill and murder. William, 30, married, residing with his father, allegedly beat Dr Thomas before and fled, leading to a deputy and posse being organized to arrest him in Monroe.
