The Senate passed a 37 billion highway bill after long debate, sending it to a conference with the House. Sen. Albert Gore predicted a joint bill would blend the best features of both measures amid disagreements on how to distribute 35 billion for interstate highways.
The 168th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the U S A urged action on desegregation in housing and public life. A report called for open occupancy covenants to curb panic selling and promote equal access to housing for minority families.
Four Lafayette youths, ages 15 to 16, were killed when their car struck a concrete culvert six miles north of Abbeville Louisiana. Another driver, Philip Hebert 16 of Andrew, was listed in critical condition at a local hospital.
In a public safety notice the Louisiana radio and TV society promotes keeping forests safe. Aimed at readers of 13 14 15 12 6 7 10 11 pages, the campaign urges vigilance to prevent forest fires and preserve green spaces statewide.
Louisiana House leaders unveil 14 administration bills proposing a four percent tax on pari mutuel betting and a 25 percent tax on gate receipts at New Orleans race tracks. The package also aims to revive the State Board of Public Welfare and the State Board of Institutions and to let voters decide in November on repealing a two thirds tax vote requirement. Additional funds would go to LSU, major fairs and festivals, and the state general fund. MayorCurt Siegelin is mentioned in context.
In Florida the Democratic race was tight with Adlai E. Stevenson leading Estes Kefauver by 212217 to 204819 as 1680 of 1778 precincts reported. In the Republican primary Dwight Eisenhower overwhelmed California Senator Knowland with 37777 to 1885 votes as results stretched into the early morning.
Senator Earle Clements, Senate majority whip, scored a landslide renomination in Kentucky's Democratic primary defeating Joe B. Bates who was backed by Governor Chandler. He advances to face Republican Thraston B. Morton in the November 6 election as returns from most precincts showed his wide lead.
The House Post Office Committee urged Congress to end a near 460 million dollar yearly deficit by raising postal rates. It approved a bill increasing first, second, and third class rates, projecting about 432 million dollars more annual revenue. The panel cited a 1000 dollar per minute loss and noted support from the administration despite polling showing opposition to a 4 cent stamp hike.
Bogalusa, La. An inquest was set for today into the shotgun death of Mandy Smith Cotton 31 year old mother of eight. She died yesterday near Pine Community while riding in an auto with three men Willard Miley Boone Miley and Daniel Carroll identified by Sheriff Dorman Crowe. The men said they were in the front seat she in the back seat. Investigating officers said Mrs Cotton planned to ask the Mil es to drive her home near Varnado. Soon after she left Mrs Miley said Mrs Cotton had killed herself.
In Baton Rouge Sheriff deputies arrested Emile Weston twenty seven for aggravated rape of a white housewife. He admitted the crime and faces the death penalty if convicted. A bandana with lipstick matching the victim’s was found. Weston had been released in 1955 after a 20 year term for an earlier attempted rape near the scene.
In Kansas City SBC President Casper C. Warren urged the convention to avoid revisiting segregation issues. He warned that defying the constitutional principle could harm foreign missions and aid Communist ridicule of democracy and Christianity. Continued on page two.
The 88th Memorial Day observance includes national ceremonies, parades in New York Chicago Boston Cleveland St Louis and Norfolk with veterans groups and armed forces marching. President Eisenhower vacationed at Gettysburg PA and will return to the White House. Navy Secretary Thomas speaks at San Francisco and a Coast Guard cutter helps move Gold Star Mothers to scatter flowers offshore.
In Tallahassee Florida Negro students and community leaders push for first come first served seating on city buses as a boycott spreads across the city. NAACP leader Rev C K Steele says they seek seating fairness while avoiding demands for full integration at this stage. The Inter-Civic Council submitted the request to City Manager Arvah Hopkins Mayor Fred Winterle and Transit manager C L Carter as officials consider the issue.
Baton Rouge leaders push five bills to defend racial segregation in Louisiana against federal interference. Bills, passed by the House public education committee, seek to block integration lawsuits, require separate recreation and travel facilities, tighten college rules, and end compulsory attendance at schools ordered to integrate. Interposition had been adopted by Louisiana, joining five other states in opposing the Supreme Court ruling.
The House Judiciary B committee favored eight administration measures led by Gov Earl Longs floor leaders. A key bill boosts old age pensions from 60 to 65 monthly, with a 60 cap for two pensioners in one home. Other measures expand boards, boost salaries for top officials, and add appointments to the Commerce and Industry and Mineral boards.
In Baton Rouge the Senate moves on a contested plan to split Wade O Martin Jr s insurance commissioner duties from his other posts as 243 bills await committee action The Judiciary B panel chair said no decision would come until Wednesday while House and Senate resumes on Memorial Day observed session resumes at 11 am
Louis Bright, 84, New Orleans coffee importer and founder of Bright and Co., died at home after a lengthy illness. He started the firm in 1937 and remained active until about three months ago. He belonged to the New Orleans Board of Trade and several coffee exchanges and associations. He is survived by a sister, Miss Clare M. Bright.
Shelbyville Missouri reports a one year old girl Nella Latchford with two safety pins in her stomach. Dr Howard Dutton is hesitant to operate due to the child’s age. The patient is described as in satisfactory condition. The pins were swallowed by the child while her father prepared her for bed on Saturday night.
The National Safety Council predicted 110 deaths in traffic accidents this Memorial holiday but police reported no wrecks, major or minor, by noon Wednesday in the area. Louisiana State Police Monroe and West Monroe police noted a quiet time and expressed hope it would continue.
Gen. Nathan F. Twining accepted the invitation to attend the Soviet Air Show in Moscow on June 24 with Eisenhower approval. Secretary Quarles said the invitation was cleared by State Secretary Dulles and Defense Secretary Wilson, and Senator Knowland urged rejection over reciprocal visits. Twining will be accompanied by Air Force officers.
Vatican doctors said Pope Pius XII showed disturbances in his circulatory system and would take an electrocardiogram as a precaution. Dr. Riccardo Galeazzi-Lisi ordered suspension of audiences and planned specialist consultation if the test indicates a problem. Vatican officials stressed there is no immediate cause for alarm and the atmosphere remained calm.
A cloudy period with scattered daytime showers is forecast for Wednesday and Thursday in the Twin Cities area. Temperatures should stay around 68 to 90 degrees, with Wednesday’s low near 66 and noon high around 84.
