Davis cites improved output at seized plants and links recent strikes to wartime pressures.
In Baton Rouge on May 29 the senate debated bills to create civil service commissions in cities with populations from 5 000 to 100 000. A proposal to curb New Orleans mayoral powers was introduced by Sen Lionel G Oft. The proposed reforms aim to regulate municipal employment and tenure, with other measures including a higher workers death benefit and a state tax code study.
Banks and financial institutions will be closed Tuesday for Memorial Day, a national holiday. The post office and all departments will also shut with no mail deliveries that day.

New York May 29 Mrs Sophie Kristiinay 31 held without bail on homicide charges after six men died in Brooklyn from suspected poison liquor. She is wife of a candy store proprietor and mother of a 3 year old boy. A bottle near Victor Filipkowski 38 and five others prompted toxicology analysis. Police say she sold 15 bottles of an alcoholic drink since last Tuesday and found 15 gallon of denatured alcohol plus 30 gallons at her home.
Allied forces drive toward Rome from the Anzio beachhead with Fifth Army storms nearing Camipoleone and Valmontone, claiming three German divisions virtually destroyed and over 15 000 prisoners. Eighth Army advances in Liri Sacco valleys break German rear guards as Monte Siserno and Ceprano fell to Allied pressure.
Preston L. Wright of Dallas told the Louisiana Homestead and Building and Loan League annual meeting that wartime housing policy and a national housing agency have caused congestion in military cities. He noted no housing for families of personnel or war workers worsens crowded cities like New Orleans and San Antonio and urged community wide planning beyond Washington to address postwar housing alongside health, education, and economic trends.
