Monroe Chamber legislative group to meet Governor Jones

The Monroe Chamber of Commerce legislative committee will meet with other state chamber committees Friday at 2 p.m. at the Baton Rouge Chamber office to confer with Governor Sam H. Jones on legislative matters affecting Louisiana business and industry. The board meeting this week is postponed to Thursday with Joe Marx Sr., committee chairman, announcing the change.

Allies Capture Norwegian Ore Port Narvik

A joint admiralty war office communique announced Narvik in northern Norway fell to Allied forces last night. Norwegian, British, and French troops also took Fagernes and Forseneset, gaining a sea and air base on the Arctic coast. Berlin reported Britain entered Narvik from the north with ships and claimed damage to British battleship and several cruisers.

Holland Speaker At Rayville Senior Luncheon

George D. Holland secretary of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce spoke at an anonymous Kiwanis club luncheon for Rayville High seniors. His address titled Unexplored Frontiers encouraged graduates to pursue future opportunities.

Army Air Corps Personnel On West Coast Is Doubled

Uncle Sam doubled army air corps personnel on the west coast and boosted the ninth corps area by 40 percent since the European war began. Enlisted strength in the ninth corps area rose to 33 573 authorized from 23 566, with actual strength about 31 000. The west coast includes Oregon Washington California Montana Idaho Utah Nevada Wyoming and Alaska and 5 500 planes authorized for the corps were about half in use.

Begnaud Named Interim Louisiana Bank Commissioner

Governor Sam Jones appointed Wilfred J. Begnaud of Lafayette as temporary bank commissioner to replace J. S. Brock, with Fontenot expected to gain the post later. Begnaud has banking and liquidation experience and will return to revenue work once a permanent appointee is named. Brock declined comment on any contest and said he is "standing put."
