Washington May 29 further inquiry by the House committee investigating fuel oil contracts disclosed testimony about government royalty purchases in Montana and Wyoming since 1920. M B Bowen manager of purchases and supplies testified the savings could reach 3 million annually, with officials noting extended terms and higher prices than market quotes. The hearing resumes Saturday as the committee reviews connections involving Fall and Sinclair Oil and the West Refining Company.
In New York on May 14 Miss Abbey Rockefeller faced a speeding charge. An officer testified that the record was altered to reflect a second offense before the magistrate’s record was adjusted. Ole Hansen former Seattle mayor now a Los Angeles resident and real estate businessman is released on a horse stealing charge in a Pasadena court. Hansen says he was charged with stealing his own horse after shipping five to Los Angeles. he recovered a horse found on a vacant Sierra Madre lot.
Los Angeles May 29 The state supreme court upheld a verdict ordering Gertrude Steele a beauty specialist to pay Pauline Hall motion picture actress 2500 for a ruined lower lip. Hall sued for 15000 claiming an operation to improve contour ruined it. a superior court jury awarded 2500, which the supreme court affirmed.
New York May 29 Arrested on a warrant by Imogene Wilson the Ziegfeld Follies beauty Frank Tinney comedian was brought from Mineola to New York. Wilson testified Tinney beat her and also abused her Negro maid. She said jealousy drove the attack and Tinney is married with a six year old son. A note reading Bub was found with police later.
Baton Rouge May 29 Speaker Stuart Douglas slipped on a sharpened aisle turn around 10 this morning. He fell to his right side injuring his shoulder and was carried to the speaker’s room where first aid was given by Dr. D W Brown of W.
Witness Means testified before the senate committee detailing alleged protection money to Jess Smith and his work investigating oil matters for the Department of Justice. He named Richard Cole and promoters of an association for protection of American rights in Mexico as forces of agitation and possible revolution. He implicated L Doheny and J Pierpont Morgan confidant Martin Egan as officers and claimed the group employs ministers and teachers to mislead the masses.
Charles F. Heath, a former Chicago druggist linked tangentially to the Robert Franks kidnapping and murder case, vanished from Mercy hospital in Louisville after a suspected suicide attempt. Detectives searched the hospital following a threatening letter supposedly from the kidnapper.
New Orleans May 29 small craft warnings were ordered displayed on the Louisiana and Texas coast. Pleasure and fishing craft were advised by the weather bureau to remain close to landlocked harbors.
