A blaze at the State Hospital for the Insane in Columbia early today killed 16 patients and injured four others. Fifteen died in or near the burning building as patients, awakened by the fire, attempted to flee and some reentered the flames.
New Orleans May 29 The Guardian Smith and Company on the cotton exchange, one of the oldest firms, reportedly failed with indications the firm was caught on the short side. Officials said the concern is not believed to be heavily involved.
Secretary Lansing said the United States views with earnest sympathy the nationalistic aspirations of the Czechoslovaks and the Jugoslavs. He stressed U S support amid ongoing peace talks and foreign policy concerns.
