James M. Nicholson announces closing dates for dormitories dining hall and student center at Northeast State between May 31 and June 5. Spring semester ends May 31 at 4 p.m. with graduation events June 2. Summer session registers June 5. Infirmary and switchboard hours noted.
A 3 year old Georgia man Sam Finley was apprehended in Monroe at the railroad depot. Monroe police said Georgia authorities want Finley for family desertion. He signed a waiver of extradition and will be picked up by the Georgia sheriff's department later.
The parade committee announces Monroe Little League Day to be observed next Saturday. Officials Steele Adler Howard and Hesketh outline a Wood Street to DeSiard route starting at 10 a.m. with more than 1000 youngsters from the Minor Dixie and Little Leagues expected to participate.
West Monroe Boy Club schedules nine week summer program from June 4 to early August with daily activities and Saturday movies. Kenneth Taylor, club director, says 431 boys ages 7 to 18 are registered. playgrounds at Lenwill School and Riser Junior High. three softball leagues planned. Judge John McCormick is club president.
In Cairo Gamal Abdel Nasser urged collective leadership to curb individual whim and avoid a president for life. He spoke to 1,750 delegates, opposing lifelong rule as he backs a socialist charter and a future Arab Socialist Union meeting to prepare a new constitution. Syria has withdrawn from the UAR.
Jeremiah Davis escaped with minor injuries when his cement mixer truck overturned in Tucson. It took a wrecker crew and crane over four hours to upright the 10 ton truck after it dumped about 67 yards of cement and the contents solidified inside the mixer.
The program lists daily offerings including physical fitness under the A A H P E R, volleyball, badminton, arts and crafts, Project Future Spaceman for boys 10 to 13, track and field, a weekly field trip to sites like airports or courts, basketball and swimming. Activities run 8:30 a.m. to noon and 3:30 p.m. with lighter sessions during peak heat.
Louisiana recorded 1961 strike activity at its lowest postwar level for idled workers though total man days lost rose from 1960. Thirty four new work stoppages halted 5,840 workers and about 207,000 man days of idleness statewide. New Orleans led with five or more stoppages and 2,280 workers affected.
The Louisiana Wildlife Federation and Ouachita Wildlife Unit oppose House Bill 167 that would abolish the state Wildlife and Fisheries Commission and cut licenses from $2 to $1. They urge a $1 universal fishing license with funds earmarked for the Wildlife and Fisheries Department to benefit hunting and fishing programs.
FTC rules Macy's Manhattan store illegally pressured suppliers into donating 540000 for the 1958 centennial celebration. The ruling says the store used its market power to extract gifts, harming competition and creating a coercive fundraising precedent. Macy's plans to appeal the decision.
Report from Kurihiro Japan notes rain contained detectable radioactivity during a year when Macy's vendors were pressed to make payments. UPI says 582 suppliers agreed to the program and about $540,000 had been collected. Officials say the activity is not dangerous but could affect business pressure on vendors.
Peggy Wade 20 of Farmerville was named L. C. Sweetheart at Louisiana College by Pine Knot editor James K. McNair. Don Rogers 21 of Eunice was named Mr. L. C. Wade, a Farmerville High School alumni and college basketball standout with multiple honors.
Louisiana Highway Director Ray W. Burgess announced plans to start the Jones Concord highway project in Morehouse and West Carroll Parishes. Green-Snider Construction Co. of Delhi holds a 428184 dollar contract to build 9.1 miles from State Routes 835 and 836 with grading drainage base asphalt and two 60 foot concrete bridges. Completion is set for 18 months and traffic will not be maintained during construction. Project engineer is Asa Ray of Monroe.
